OT To Greek Or Not To Greek

But yeah - her aunt (on her dad's side) is really wanting her to do it, so I'm leaving it up to her to break all the details down for her. She'll be almost 20 by then - she can pay for some of her own stuff!

The pledge semester is always the most expensive (you have to buy the badge, which is always a gorgeous piece). I have no idea what dues are now, but I think mine were approx $125/semester (I could be making that up though, it's been a long time since I paid dues). Dues my pledge semester were approx $300 with the cost of the badge.

SO wishing I rushed! Next year for sure! Thinking about one of the multicultural ones (
Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha Inc. aka SIA), Tri-Delta, Chi-Omega, or Kappa Delta...

As someone that is in a multicultural organization, I just want to let you know that the process of joining the organization is very different from joining a Panhellenic ( Tri-Delta, Chi Omega, Kappa Delta) sorority. I don't know how SIA does it but the process usually involves attending the sororities events and getting to know them over a period of time. Technically if you wanted to join SIA next semester you could if you begin going to their events this semester. It would be best to reach out to them and ask them for more information. I hope however that this does not deter you from continuing to look into a multicultural sorority! Good Luck!

Well it'll be like having her in public school in Chicago then. :rolleyes: The school fee for high school here are about $500-700/year, depending on the school, so I'll just continue to budget like she's going to school here. Anything above that she's on her own! :eek::eek::eek: (What a nice mom! :p ) Lol I look at it like cheer - anything that keeps my kids involved in something other than just hanging out being bored is worth the money to me. The busier they are the less trouble they have time for, right?

And I'm a sucker for "gorgeous pieces" so it won't be hard to get me to buy stuff...

Well it'll be like having her in public school in Chicago then. :rolleyes: The school fee for high school here are about $500-700/year, depending on the school, so I'll just continue to budget like she's going to school here. Anything above that she's on her own! :eek::eek::eek: (What a nice mom! :p ) Lol I look at it like cheer - anything that keeps my kids involved in something other than just hanging out being bored is worth the money to me. The busier they are the less trouble they have time for, right?

And I'm a sucker for "gorgeous pieces" so it won't be hard to get me to buy stuff...

Yeah sororities usually prefer to speak to you about it in person. They will probably be super helpful and informative and let you know most things you want to know!

There are a lot of things that historically african american and panhellenic organizations (KD) do differently but there are also a lot of things they do the same. The recruitment process is very different from a panhellenic sorority, it is basically the same as that of the multicultural organization that I described above. Another thing that may be different is the pledging process vs. a panhellenic sorority. I do not know specifics about either because they are usually secret rituals but it is what I have been told. All in all though they basically all have the same foundations. They go to Homecoming, Greek Week, their own Sorority founding week, Recruitment and parties. It mostly comes down to being different culturally than foundationally if that makes any sense lol.

Not necessarily a difference, but they fall under a different council. KD is a part of the National Panhellenic Conference. It's 26 National sororities that all share the same ideals, work together ect. Basically, it's the governing body. ZPB is National Pan-Hellenic Council. Same thing, made of national fraternities and sororities that historically Black. The process isn't necessarily different, though that depends on the campus/chapter. The AKA chapter at my school was our sister sorority. We shared the same colors. Had mixers together and everything!

To add to what @Cheerspectator101 said, the pledging process may be different. At my school, they were underground. You had no idea who was pledging them until after initiation. Then, they'd be outside the Student Center doing a step routine (always one of my favorite days). Other than that, they were exactly the same as the rest of Greek life.

I've seen them doing that! I didn't know that was a pledging thing - I thought they were just doing it for fun. :oops: Well, just like cheer...here's hoping she got her daddy's rhythm and not mine! If she did a step routine with my rhythm they'd be like "Girl...what are you doing??? Uh...go see if KD will still take you" :confused:

She's still choosing between 3 schools, so I guess once she decides that then she can see what she wants to do. Yay for fierce board help with everything, not just cheer! :D

Oh they did it for fun too. Every year, they would host a step show. Fraternities and Sororities from other schools would come in. AMAZING!!!! But they also did a routine after initiation. I don't know if that was just a tradition at my school or what, but it was always fun to be outside that day.

My RA was Alpha Phi Alpha. We made him teach us one day....yeah, it wasn't pretty haha

Yes during the NPHC pledging process the people will seem as though they disappear and you will only know when at the end of the semester they have what is typically called either a probate or a new member show. Its always fun and is meant to show the audience how much information they learned and how good they are at stepping and strolling. There are always pretty intense rivalries to see who is better between the NPHC sororities and Fraternities and even the Multicultural organizations also step and stroll.

We do it a lot actually lol. If we are at a party and a song come on that we can stroll to, you will see organizations just getting up and doing it! It's a lot of fun!

Yes!! Always was the best day on campus. It definitely was a show, and definitely got intense. You'd always see the sisters sitting around the freshly initiated. They all looked so happy. I know what I felt at initiation, and I'm sure it showed on my face, but no one got to witness it other than my sisters. Little jealous that the entire campus got to see them enjoy their moment ;)
