Okay speaking of Laney Madsen this made me laugh. This was posted on gymnastic confession tumblr which is very popular on gymternet. I have a question about her gymnastic and hopefully some can answer it because I was wondering for some time.
Her dad posts on facebook that she is an elite gymnast. But don't you have to qualified for elite and before that don't you have to compete at some level 10 competitions. I was wondering how did she become an elite with no gymnastic meets before that?

Other that that. She is amazing kid and I don't see nothing wrong with her technique. I know she has triple, double arabian and double back on floor and double twisting yurchenko on vault.

On a smaller level, I went to my cousins level 5 gymnastics meet last week. Her tumbling technique was flawless. I was in utter shock.

Her younger sister is level 3 (and I unfortunately had to miss her meet) but I remember her telling me that she had her backhandspring and robhs but "Its not polished...its not perfect like it should be".

After the meet my mom sent me the video of her floor routine.... her roundoff bhs literally looked like every robhs I've ever seen in a cheerleading routine.

Gymnastics technique and standards is out of this world

My daughter did gymnastics age 2-7 before cheer - her gymnastics coach would not even let her do a backhandspring by herself (without a spot) until it looked flawless. I am glad she learned the basics in gymnastics - back walkover, roundoff/backhandspring, as her foundation/technique helped her build up to harder skills. She competed AAU gymnastics at age 11 for the fun of it at level 5 and did fairly well... but bars, beam, and vault skills and technique and skills had to be there. Before she quit gymnastics for cheer - she was level 4 team and practiced 3 hours a week/3 times a week just for the beginning level of competition at 6 years old. The emphasis on technique placed on every movement they did from a forward roll, simple handstand, to a cartwheel on beam, to a round off backhandspring was always there and critiqued - something was always "seen" and corrected, most of the time - sometimes they got away with doing it correctly ;) But sometimes a good portion of practice could be spent on the technique of a certain skill they were practicing/just learning. Strength/stretching/conditioning also took up parts of practice time - as well as working a certain skill set over and over.

I just dont see her making WAG even in 2020. The sheer depth of US talent even at the junior level is astronomical. If she could completely shift focus and manage to swing bars/beam as that's what we need (vault and floor are similar so im not surprised she's ok at those), perhaps. But we need all rounders, not specialists. Power tumbling, definitely.

I'd be happy for her, but I'd be very surprised if it happened. Unless she goes into power tumbling (if I remember correctly it's becoming a part of the 2016 Olympics). Even Alicia Sacramone is considered a strange case in gymnastics starting at 9

Anything can happen, just because it's never happened before to anyone else doesn't mean it can't. Don't doubt her! God has a plan for her.

If Power Tumbling is in the 2016 Olympics I wonder if Angel Rice has given any thought to training towards that goal?

Side note was watching lots of our juniors' videos lately and it's nuts. This quad and next are going to be amazing, still looking for standout bar workers. I'm a little sad at the talent well be forced to leave home

I really could see her making the Olympic team for 2020. Being a former gymnast, I understand where people would come from thinking that she has started too late, etc. But in reality, the girl is 12 years old, just started gymnastics a little over a year ago, and is progressing very fast on all events.
For someone who started just a little over a year ago, a double twisting yurchenko is no small feat- not to mention the new skills she has put down on the floor and beam. I cannot speak for her UB ability, but she is becoming proficient in all events. Sure her form may not be the cleanest, but compare how her form is now compared to how it was when she competed with Mafia. The girl works harder than most male gymnasts I've trained with; she has even gained notice from Martha Karolyi. Maybe she will be a tad weaker in some areas, but name one gymnast who isn't! All I'm saying is that she has made leaps and bounds in a little over 1 year; give her another 6 and she will be so far past where she is now. Give the girl a little faith lol

I have faith in her. She will grow to be an even more incredible cheerleader and gymnast, but the depth of the women's program in the US is disgusting, and a majority of them specialize in floor and vault. Her progressing on floor and vault does almost nothing for her chances. If Martha needed a 12 year old floor and vault specialist right now, she'd have 100 to choose from that can do exactly what Laney does. I'm not counting her out of going to the Olympics because she's not talented, I'm counting her out because the areas that the USA would need her most are not areas she's likely to excel in having started so late.

I have known 2 people to have trained with Martha before and what they have said is that she values hard work just as much as she does skill. She definitely is a hard working athlete. She'll be an interesting case in gymnastics. She might wanna give up cheer soon though, if her dream is actually to go to the Olympics.

She will start competing next season :)
