This is the great debate of life for my teams. Half my bases prefer jump in. Half prefer step in, and it's about the same split for the flyers.

Since we don't compete until February, I haven't overly committed one way or the other, so I'm wondering what the "norm" is!

Although this thread should probably be in the skills section, I believe that stepping in is the best. Every flyer I've ever had step in and I think it makes the load in more solid. Juming in can create a 'shakyness'...but of course flyers should be able to do both. :)

a lot of my girls prefer jump in, but i feel thats more dangerous and puts more force on the bases, step in creates better timing i feel, but then again there are some girls that just CANT get the step in.. grrr

Step in, always have, always will. Never slip and timing is so much easier. UCA way is to jump in, but I'll never :p

hmm.. never really thought about this before cause I always forget about the step it (I am a UCA alum staffer though :p) but we jump in.

We always jumped in but then started to do the step in sometimes. As a base, I prefer the jump in just because sometimes the flyer will step in and not get one foot all the way on it sometimes gets one too far forward.

All of the flyers except for 1 jump in, as a base I'd prefer jump in.

I was an UCA guy through college. Once I started coaching in the gym full time, I switched away from a lot of UCA techniques. With that being said, step in, cleaner and smoother.

I think that jumping in make it hard to keep your butt up, which makes it harder to ride. I suppose if you jump in and have a few counts to get set it wouldn't be too bad.

As a flyer, i prefer stepping in. its easier for me to keep my butt up and have my weigh shifted correctly. jumping in it's a little bit harder for me to get my butt up and weight shifted.

I prefer step in, but that's probably because that's how I learned it. I'm a base, and I learned "little, little, big!" For the bounces and I still think that (: idk if everyone does this but when flyers have jumped in they've always just wanted one bounce, so it throws me off and I feel like I have less power. If the flyer prefers it I can do it though. I also don't mind jumping in if we do two bounces, but sometimes flyers tell me it's weird for them to do two because they bounce off of your hands a little after the first bounce. So I prefer step in as a base. One girl on our team jumps and the others all step in.

I taught my high school girls to step in because (for them) jumping in created too many timing/slipping/anything else under the sun issues. I do however feel like jumping in gives the group a little more momentum. The bases use the absorption of the flyer jumping in as their dip to toss. It's a little more fluid of a movement. Timing wise stepping in looked better though.
