Do I need to buy cheer shoes for competition and practice? Can my daughter wear one pair for both? I hear different things from different parents. What do you all do?

I wear 1 pair for both. I did wear an old pair for tumbling while I broke in a new pair, but I only use 1 pair of shoes for everything now.

It is completely up to you and your CP's preferences. If you decide to go with 1 for practice and 1 for comp. make sure your comp. shoes have been worn before, fit well, and are comfortable. You don't want to go compete in never worn before, bran new shoes. That can lead to disaster.

Mine used to always have two since they don't last. A new pair for competitions that were clean and in good shape and a practice pair. When the practice pair died I'd bump down the competition shoes to practice ones and buy a new pair for competitions and so the cycle goes.

However, cp14 is rather attached to just wearing one pair now and won't let me buy new ones yet because she wants them in good shape and said as soon as I buy them she's going to start wearing them anyway....so I'm waiting. CP16 has two. Had vengeance for competition because they were required but practices in varsities (the ones that look like evolutions) because they are his absolute favorite. But the gym we're with now doesn't care what shoes they wear so long as they're white cheer shoes so I'm sure those vengeance will never be worn again. His varsities last forever though so I might get out of buying him another pair to compete in :)

It truly is your preference. Our gym just requires that your comp shoes look clean or as clean as possible when the team takes the floor. This is CP 8th year and I have always bought 2 pair. She would typically start wearing her comp pair to practices to break them in 1 month before our 1st comp and then just wear them to practices the week leading up to a competiton weekend. It worked for her to always have pretty clean shoes for every comp.

Our gym has our athletes wear No Limits, the mesh ones. Cp usually gets a new pair sometime in the fall and wears them to practices and through and after competition season. I may invest in two pairs this season since she seems to be in need of a new pair right now. Plan is to keep one in the car for that "just in case" day she leaves home without a pair.

My daughter started at a program that it was mandatory for the athletes to have 2 pairs, 1 for competition only and they must be the last pass and in pristine condition and white white and the athletes were not allow to wear these sneakers outside at all and then there was 1 to practice in, which the gym did not care what brand you bought.
Now, she is at a gym that do not care about sneakers and what brand you buy, but the coach for her team wanted the athletes to have clean sneakers for NCA, but otherwise, they just wanted the athletes to wear sneakers that were comfortable and well broken in. Because my daughter started cheer from a program that was very stringent on all the athletes being uniform, I am now conditioned to buy 2 pairs of sneakers-
- 1 for competition, which I leave in the car - funny story behind this, we driving to RI and after driving 3 hrs away and almost to RI, my daughter suddenly springs up looking through her luggage and discovered she forgot her sneakers, we yelled and screamed at my daughter, then we called the coach, who called around and I guess she found an athlete from another team that wore the same size sneakers and/or bought an extra pair of sneakers, but luckily, I found a vendor at the competition that sold sneakers and purchase her a pair. So sneakers stay in the trunk now.
- 1 she practice in.

Had to smile at your post I carry all our old shoes in the back of the car and we have had numerous girls borrow them for practice or in one case comps. They all know come to me and see if I have the size they need (with multiple Cps it is usually likely although I did just reduce the load as bag was overflowing).

You probably were the mom who saved countless athletes lives during away competitions... I cannot tell you how relieved we were when the coach told us to relax and we will work it out, just tell your daughter to make sure she had her uniform and ready to perform, which thank goodness I packed myself! So since you mentioned about saving old sneakers, I decided I will definitely throw in the trunk all the sneakers my daughter outgrew, just for a situation like this...
Btw, if that athlete did not thank you, let me give you biggest thank you for being so thoughtful!

My CP has cheered at two different gyms. Both gyms only required us to have one pair at a time. My CP is still young, so that would be crazy expensive to have to keep two different pair of shoes at one time. One season, she went through 3 pair of shoes!

Just check with what your gym wants.

i only have one pair and it works great because you are used to tumbling/stunting in the same pair and your bases are used to holding those shoes so it works well for me.

I would get one for practice and then one for competitions. I say this because of the following, the girls need to know what it feels like to perform in the shoes for practice, if they don't fit, or they just don't like them, they have a second pair to fall back on.

It's just always a good idea to have extra pairs. You never want to just have one pair. They don't last very long either. (At least the ones I had). So it will only benefit you. It's a little more expensive, but worth it.
