I know when it was being filmed in April, my boyfriend's campus was shut down because they were filming at Duquesne University for this. He wants to see the movie just to see his college, but I want to see the movie for the actual content!

I completely understand where you are coming from. Mine is 15 and if she got a concussion from cheer I think that would be it for her. Her school teammate sustained an injury in September - a blow to the face which they originally thought was a fractured nose but turned out to be a concussion - and she's still not back in school. It's been 3 months. They're hoping she comes back after midterms.
A girl I went to HS with played basketball and had 5 before she SELF-selected to quit at further risk of damage to her brain. As much as she wanted to play and loved playing, she didn't want to risk further trauma. I don't know the severity of each one, but I know one put her out for at least 2 months.

As proof of the NFL's power- explain how a corporation with THAT much money can still be considered 'Not for Profit' (I mean, I know how they get away with it, but the fact that so few people question it is ridiculous. They're the FIFA of American sports).

There is cheerleader who cheered all-star with my CP the past 3 seasons. She was on her 3rd concussion last year when my CP got her 1st. Due to coaches pressuring her to tumble before getting cleared, she stopped doing allstar. Continued to cheer for HS. one of the Coaches from our gym is also the asst coach at her HS, where she was being pressured to continue cheering.

CP talk to her last week, she got another concussion, that makes #5. Her Dr told her after the 3rd that she should stop cheering and no contact sports.

Coaches need to take concussions much more seriously, but as parents we need to put our foot down and walk away from anyone/any organization willing to endanger our kids in this manner. It sucks enough that some of our kids will have to deal with the aftermath of injuries long after they stop cheering, but how can you justify risking more and perhaps permanent brain injury?

The NFL gave up their non profit status.

Agreed! I'll give most parents a pass for not getting it---I can't, however, ignore when a doctor tells a child to stop something and the parent ignores it.

I would too! Watching you can see just how powerful the NFL is in what they did to those who spoke out about this situation. Sadly, even with the #s they present in this movie, I don't think those with dreams of their little Sammy making it big in football will change their game plan out of concern for Sammy's brain. Yet, even with the pressure I'm sure they got from the NFL, the numbers presented at the end...more than 1/4.

Anyway...my lingering question...just how many hits does it take? Could this happen to a kid who played pop Warner and HS only? Or do you have to be a long time player who takes hits repeatedly including the hit intensity of pro football?
Think about Mohammed Ali, Mike Tyson and even Peyton Manning...they all speak very slowly and sound like they can't gather thoughts. Reading more about CTE, they don't know how many hit it takes. Some get one hit and develop symptoms while others with many concussions don't. :/

Yes!

There was a Worlds team athlete basing with an obvious injury I think it was last year. You don't know how many ADULTS (coaches/industry pros) commented on photos and/or videos of that kid with things like:

"YASSSS."
"PUSH."
"Goals."

Same with a recent video of a younger flyer with an obvious injury.

Adults need to stop glorifying it before the kids will.
I have been guilty of this in the past. It's definitely a huge problem.

Because sometimes the kids want to go to worlds no matter what, they push themselves too far.

Agree, but it isn't just World teams or Cheer.

Sometimes doctors don't even really give the best advice. My CP had a concussion. One dr cleared her for activity right away while another said give it a month.

I think this also comes from the past mentalities of just suck it up/toughen up. I have seen this from both parents and coaches apply this to everyday bumps and bruises to serious injuries. It's difficult to understand an injury when it can't be seen by the naked eye. When I first entered the sport around the early 2000s up until about 2012 I hadn't really heard the word concussion used in the sport. I'm glad everyone is starting to understand the severity of concussions but I don't think this "push" mentality is new or stemmed from social media glorification.
