Curious what you think, We went to a comp. our team threw a perfect flawless routine. We got second to a team that had a stunt fall & a tumble touch down. To me both teams looked sharp, together, and packed full of difficulty. We were shocked we didn't get first. Then, this weekend we went up against the same team. This time we had a stunt fall & a tumble touch down. They looked really good. We thought for sure they beat us. Instead we beat them. Although, we happily accepted first place (no complaints) we were shocked. Does this all seem a litle backwards................................

It all depends on the EP's score sheet. At some competitions, difficulty is preferred over perfection and vise versa. Also, perhaps your overall impression and execution scores were higher than before. There are small ways to bump up your score by doing things only slightly different :)

While it seems odd, it's less odd then you realize. ilikebigbows has pretty much hit the nail on the head. Also deductions for the falls/touchdowns could have been at a lower fraction of the score. An EP could deduct a full point for a fall and others may only do .5.

Being that this is a judged sport you never know what the judges actually see and how much weight it may carry. In addition, you KNOW that their personal preference to one routine over another may have some impact as well. I try to be objective when scores and awards are announced but surprises usually happen. Over the long haul the cream usually rises to the top.

Yeah, this is our 7th year competing in this sport and I find that the judges get more fair each year. The reality is that I am becoming more informed and saavy with seeing what they are looking for. Of course it is a subjective sport like gymnastics or diving so there will always be personal preferences for style, etc., but there is less of that than many think.
