Hi all. I'm new here and I am hoping you can help me. My daughter is 15 and in her 7th year of cheerleading. She has had Asthma since she was 6 yrs old and it seems to be getting worse as she gets older. It is now causing her to not complete her necessary tumbling in her team's routine. She uses her inhaler before practice and during if needed. Are there any tips or advice I can give her? She is becoming frustrated because her asthma is now holding her back from competing in the way she wants. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

We actually have an appointment on Friday with her dr. She is on a preventative inhaler and Singular which she does not take regularly because she "forgets" even with my reminders. Its like she looses stamina but her coaches all believe it is related to her asthma. She seemed more controlled a few months ago but it seems to be out of control again. I am just curious if there are different breathing exercises she could do or if a cardio routine on her off cheer days would help or make a difference.

First you have to get her to take her meds and get her asthma under better control.

My cp has been asthmatic since she was 18 mos old. She will be 15 this summer. She takes singular everyday as her allergies and change of weather are big triggers for her. She also takes pulmacort as a prevent ive med and has albuterol inhaler as needed. I also have a nebulizer for.albuterol when necessary. I have had a nebulizer since she was diagnosed as a baby. Only use it when she labors to breathe or when she cant go 2 hours without wheezing between treatments.

Cp also takes Singular everyday and has an inhaler as a preventative measure, but she has more "exercise-induced asthma" than regular asthma. I find that this time of year - going from the cold outside to the hot gym - sometimes makes it harder for her. Adding Zyrtec or Claritin to her daily routine during the winter into the spring has made a difference, but see what your doctor says.

I'm with everyone else. Talk to the dr.

Also keep in mind there may be environmental factors or allergies.

Mini got very wheezy last night at practice, for no apparent reason. He has regular asthma and takes singulair, Pulmicort inhaler (preventive,) Allegra, and Xopenex inhaler. For whatever reason, he really struggled.

Not medicine related, but swimming is really good for kids with asthma. If you can get to a lap pool once a week it will really help her lungs and diaphragm.
