Curious to hear what any of the Judges on here think, for all star cheer: facials or just natural smiles?

I am curious, too! I wonder if region has a lot to do with it? The reason why I say this, is because I heard that cheer teams in the south do not sing along with the words and actually make fun of the midwest teams that do? (Disclaimer: this is not my opinion, but rather just something I heard from another parent and it could be totally false!)

Im trying to help my daughter with closed mouth facials. You know the ones that don't show teeth. She is pretty much missing almost every tooth in the front (top & bottom) and they all recently fell out and I'm sure those front teeth will be a long time coming! Lol

Just throwing this in for regional perspective:

According to cp, facials means. At least smiling, or mouthing the words or doing that weird surprised face, etc. Being "fun" is strongly encouraged We're in Texas.

But absolutely NONE of that fish face/puffed out cheeks/bobble head is allowed. and you CAN go overboard mouthing the words.

oh god. i watched videos of myself competing from 2005. Apparently i was a big fan of kissy-face/bobblehead. Simultaneously.

My 9 year old has strong tumbling, but she is struggling with making facials. I think she is just too woried / self conscious about how she looks when she tries to do her facials. Please post good facial photos for me to share with her. Advice is also appreciated! Thanks! :)
our kids are told to learn the routine and sing it....:) but boy could I get back at my kids for some stuff by posting a few facial pics I have...muah!!!

Everything's bigger in Texas....especially the facials! ;)

ok done for now :)

Have her practice while looking in the mirror. That way she can figure out what looks good and what doesn't. Should make her more comfortable. If she can do it while marking her routine to the music even better.

That surprises me. Facials are a big part of all of the all star cheer competitions I have been to. At one competition the judge even wrote on the score sheet that we needed better facials & we lost points because of it.

Ugh. When I judge I write on the score sheets to just smile, not make any crazy faces!

we had this girl on a 4.2 team who went so overboard with her shaking of head and facials. she had to be taken out of basing the side prep in the pyramid because she dropped it too many times because of the shaking and closing of her eyes. it was ridiculous.

I’m all for the cute little girls doing cute facials, but sometimes it gets a little out of hand, especially with the older kids. It can get scary.... I think smiling is the best facial IMO.

i think that was the thing to do back then. some kids did not want to let it go and were still hanging on in the 07-09 years...lol..

In the south they prefer our girls to have a natural smile, meaning they should look like they're having a fabulous time (not Mona Lisa but not the joker either). The occasional mouthing the words or a playful point to the audience is fine. We got a negative comment about over the top facials last year when our top girl in our mini pyramid decided to wink in her cupie (really? That's over the top? Yikes).
I remember the days of a-e-I-o-u and kissy faces and bobble head tho and it IS distracting. It's like watching a team with a severe case of stress twitches!

I am from Texas (part of the South) and the ones we have been to love winks & big facials. I guess it varies state to state or which comp. you go to. If our girls just smile, we lose points.
