Sucks if you bring more than one team.... Can you imagine filling out more than 3? ECE had to do 6 last year.

We just had to do this for USA Nationals in Anaheim, for our Jr 3 and Sr 4 teams, what a pain!!

I agree that this is a pain in the butt too. I found a system that gets me through it. Takes time, but I'm able to find all the information:

3. Song Writer's Name
4. Song Publisher's Name
5. Publisher Affiliation (BMI, ASCAP, SESAC)

- You can usually find all 3 in either the ascap website or bmi website (ascap.com and bmi.com). For ascap click on ACE / Repertory at the top. Then click on "click here to search the database". You can do a search by title or performer. If it's licensed by ascap you'll find it there. If not, in the bmi website scroll over search and then do the "Repertoire Search". Same process as the ascap website.

7. Name of the Record Label for CD/Tapes
- This information isn't on the ascap or bmi website. I always go to amazon.com and do a music search for the song. When you find the song if you scroll down to "Product Details" it will list the Label for you and that's the information you need.

IF you have it in your iTunes, it may be listed in there under the "song info"

After taking a media law class last semester I understand why all of this is necessary. It's annoying I'm sure (I wouldn't want to do it) but if they air your routine without without being able to pay royalties it would be a HUGE legal battle.

That class really changed my perspective on a lot of stuff. I honestly don't even understand how cheerleading music remains legal. haha

That's the truth! Gymnastics routines have to use a "stylized" version of a song.

I understand music mixers get paid for providing a "service" and not a "product" but the whole idea of them taking other people's creations without licenses, mashing them together with sound effects, and profitting (a lot) off it seems odd. My teacher was a practicing lawyer and when I explained it to him he said it sounded like something was up there, and my guess is he would be chomping at the bit to take a case against it. Here's to hoping he never does. haha.

BUT I digress.

Agreed. I've wondered that for years.

That is why I never understand why gyms get mad when their mix gets out, sure they paid for it, but they never paid the artist for using their music. I will probably never understand how cheer mixes get away with it. Especially teams with artists like Prince in their mixes, he is super anal about his music being used and has sued people for using cuts of his music before without permission and paying him.

And I even know some music mixers (not any of the popular ones I'm sure) download their music that they use illegally from p2p sites! I don't even understand how that is still happening. I have a feeling 1 bad court case and it could all be over for us. Here's to hoping that never happens!

Thats when we'll have to start using horrible things like the UCA/NCA camp music. eeek
