OT Hair Help!!!cheer Curlers

hi everyone, so this season our hairstyle is cheer curls 1/2 up 1/2 down with a bump. My situation is this,
I have ethnic hair , I straighten my hair every week since 7th grade ( everyone called me the peurto rician richard simons) haha i know.

But what do I use to give my hair the spiral cheer curls, mind you just to get that look I have to keep my hair straight? What type of curlers works best, do I mist my hair? I cant wet it and use the curler because the outcome is HIDEOUS

Does anyone else deal with this
