I will be a sophomore this year and I attend a 3A school with about 400-500 kids. I will most likely attend that school this year but after that I will be moving to a 6A school with about 2000 kids! At my school everyone makes the team, we don't compete, we don't tumble, and I was a base last year but we hardly stunted so I still don't know what I'm doing. My coaches also said I would learn to fly but I never had the chance. So at the new school I could potentially be a base or a flyer. They also have try outs and obviously a lot of students, they might compete but I'm not sure, and they do a lot of stunting and tumbling. I am on varsity at my school and I really want to be on varsity there, or at least make JV! But I can't stunt or tumble, I have a year to learn any advice to get me at their level by then?

Can you sign up for tumble classes or privates at a local cheer or gymnastics gym? I really think that is the safest way to learn to tumble.

I'm on varsity at a 6A school with 2400 students! The main thing I would say is to show the ability to learn new stuff quickly and tumbling classes would probably help if they're available. Make sure you find one thing you know that'll give you an edge on your competitors and use it to your advantage. Good luck!

I have been looking into taking classes but I don't know if my parents would go for it because I just started taking violin lessons. How much do classes usually cost? Maybe I could pay for them myself.

It really depends on your area. I would recommend looking at the websites (sometimes they list prices and schedules), calling, and/or visiting to get more info. I think our gym is $60 a month for a weekly one hour tumble class, but team members get a 50% discount. So, it is just $30 a month for us.

Thanks guys! And what stunts and tumbles do you do on your squad? So I have an idea of what I need I learn.
That's different for every school. For example, the HS in my town is looking for girls who can do level 3 and 4 stunts (switch ups, full downs, full ups, etc.) The high school 20 minutes away is no where near that advanced and their girls do preps, libs, extensions, etc. Be the best you that you can be. You're not going to learn to base high level stunts by yourself in a year...so make sure the rest of your skills, including jumps, motions and dancing, are super polished.

See if the new school you're going to go to has a Facebook/Instagram/Twitter page for the cheer team. If they do you can probably get an idea of what the team is like from pictures and videos they post. Also, look them up on YouTube! If they have any recent competition videos then you'll be able to see what they do from there too.
