if a competition is added to your schedule? I just got an email today. Basically said the schedule was posted as tentative. We had a competition that was canceled early in the season, so we will be competing this weekend. As in 4 days away. Many parents had no idea this comp was added. Rumors were swirling at our comp on Sunday, but nothing confirmed till today. It's local, so I can roll with it, but many parents are very unhappy with the short notice. Thoughts?

I wouldn't want to be in that situation. Approaching comps require longer and more frequent practices. Not to mention, the payment of comp fees, arrangement for travel (even if the event is local, people have jobs and families and priorities outside of cheer).

4 days is too short of notice - rsvp's to birthday parties and other events are usually already in, plans are made, etc. I think at least 2 weeks notice should be given for a mandatory competition.

2 seasons ago we added a 5 hour drive comp into the schedule the weekend before. It was the team who initiated it though because we had just done bad at a bid competition but we're still super close for a bid and we also wanted more practice competing because we always broke under the pressure. It was for one team, and every parent had to agree for us to attend. Even if one parent said no the coaches said we would not go. We ended up going but to keep cost down only 5-6 parents went and girls went with other parents and stayed all within a few rooms. That has been the only time a competition has really been added for me but the whole team/parents had to agree. But for a competition to be added in without notice or a vote without at least a month is crazy to me. Way to much going on for non comp weekends because you have to work around competitions as it is.

I hate that short notice for anything...other plans in place, commitments etc... just not right

Gyms get mad at families for making last minute plans, and then go and do stuff like this. The door swings two ways -- if gyms want athletes and parents to respect practice and competition dates/times, they need to respect the time of the families in their gym. Some level of "cheer comes first" is okay, but this takes it to an extreme. I'd be really peeved as an athlete, a parent, or a coach. I am very much a person of habit. You can't throw things like this at me with that short of notice.

So it's Thursday morning. No confirmation yet whether or not we're actually competing on Saturday.

Competition was never on the schedule, or it was on the schedule as tentative?

It was never on the schedule. There was a comp canceled early in the season. There was a different comp on the schedule this week that was canceled as of January. But no update to continue to hold this date.

Matter of fact, no notice that the comp originally on this date was canceled-- we just kind of figured it out when we were never told to book flights or hotels.

Ew. Yeah, not good. I would be irritated. Lack of communication is a big peeve of mine...I can't function without some kind of schedule/notice.

@Lazydaisytoo can you ask? I would have an angry mob outside of my gym if I didn't have the detailed event info email sent out by the Monday morning before that weekend. And comps are put on the schedule in August and that is what we stick to. I changed one competition this year and that's because I didn't realize it was one of those shady, Xtreme-ly Full of Crap events that always cancel the day before or day of when I added it. I found a replacement comp about 2-3 weeks before and everyone was pleased about the reason I made the change. You need 2-3 weeks to plan for a competition. Not 2-3 days.

On the flip side, how do you feel when your gym pulls out of a competition on short notice? We were to travel about two hours out of town to compete, as per the schedule we received last June. However, a few weeks ago the gym emailed everyone to say we wouldn't be going. Not because of injuries, a change in venue, anything like that. It was because it's spring break here, and too many families said they couldn't go. I'm a little disappointed we're not going, but I'm more irritated because people knew about the date for this comp months ago, yet still chose to make vacation plans for the same date...whereas other people skipped spring break plans to attend the comp.

We were sent an email asking us to respond if we can't attend this weekend. I got it on Tuesday and replied right away that we were OK to attend. No reply as of yet.

It's not unusual to email and never get a reply. We usually get out comp day report times on Wednesday, so we're all used to that routine. And I'm OK with that. But overall, the lack of communication with this program is frustrating.
