I was (until Thursday) an Assistant Cheer Coach at the local High School, I'm a 50 y/o man and the Head Coach is a woman (she's also my wife). I was asked by the Athletic Director to not come to practices anymore. The reason he gave was that the girls do not feel comfortable with me around, but I believe it was a couple of the mom's didn't think a man had a place in girls cheerleading. There was an incident a couple weeks ago where we were having a meeting after a game and one of the girls started changing with me in the room so I left. I didn't think it was a big deal because they all were wearing spankys and they would sometimes practice in just spankys. I have been around since August so I don't believe they didn't feel comfortable around me. No one ever approached me or my wife. No complaints until now. I should mention that it was an unofficial, unpaid position. I'm really bummed, I was enjoying it so much. I have coached girls softball for 5 years along with boys football so I'm not new to coaching. Thanks for letting me vent!!

In today's society and post post sandusky scandal, people are going to unfortunately jump to that conclusion. And with a recent arrest in the cheerleading world of a male coach for engaging in activity with his cheerleaders.

Don't get me wrong, I totally understand why the school did what they did but that doesn't make it right. I did nothing wrong. There are thousands of male coaches out there coaching females, the percentage of improper conduct is minimal. I was NEVER alone with them, that was my rule to protect myself, just because I didn't want any false accusations. Anyway thanks for your comment.

It's happening more and more in lieu of recent scandals and innocent people are usually turned into victims. If you didn't do anything wrong, I think sitting down with the AD and your wife and sort some things out. Often people base their opinions on one side of the story and I do believe it is fair that you get your side too. Good luck and I hope you get your spot back!
