Hi,
My cp just made a sr. 4.2 team and a jr. 3 team at a well-established gym. It seems that more than half of the girls (and 1 boy) on her 4.2 team do not have their level 2 tumbling skills, and more than half of the girls on her level 3 team do not have all their level 3 tumbling skills (including my daughter, who still needs a spot for her running tuck). It has me a little concerned...How will they get it together by the fall? Is this a fairly typical practice, to have that many kids not have all their skills at tryouts with the idea they will gain skills? I'm trying to just trust that the coaches knew what they were doing when they made the teams and levels. -I'd consider the gym reasonably successful, as they have been around a long time and have had their level 5 elite team do well at worlds the past few years.

Many gyms want their lower level teams to be learning teams. So asking them to stretch a bit isn't out of line. Also they don't need to get it together by the fall. They need to get it together but the spring which is when most of the big national competitions are held. Give them some space and don't stress over how they may look the first 3-4 months of comp season.

It's all about the journey and where you end up; not where you start.

Cool. That makes sense.

Maybe it depends but where we are at that is a no go. They don't care if the rule says you only need a certain percent they want 100%. I like this because I feel like no kid gets a free pass. I know others don't agree:/

Also I will say I see gyms with great worlds teams that have regular lower level teams that look a hot mess. It baffles me. I'm not saying your kids team does, I don't even know the gym but I will say it has happened.

It's hard to talk to the coaches because with this type of convo it is like saying I don't trust your decisions or they will take it as you are bringing up other kids which both of these scenarios can turn out badly. So I'm going to wish you luck, hopefully everything falls into place and they are able to get it under control! I hope the skills all come soon! Good luck!

I feel like it's pretty common!! I think it puts more pressure on the girls (and guys) to better in tumbling because there's a deadline! I don't feel like its too much of any pressure for them, it's that push you need. Plus if they made the team they should be on, what are you really striving for? (Don't attack me for this lol) like you already have all the tumbling, all you can do is perfect that and work on stunting. I like the strive for being better and advancing without having to switch levels halfway through.

Plus it makes coaches focus a little bit more on tumbling instead of more on stunting and then tumbling could get sloppy. Idk I think you should be fine IMO! :)

I've talked to a couple of parents whose kids on the level 3 team were level 2 last year. They said that their level 2s started out much the same last year, and by the end of the year they got a bid to the Summit and did very well. And it does seem that my daughter is more motivated to be on the level 3 than she would be if she had been put on level 2 and not have as much to work for.

I remember when my oldest was on a mini prep team (back in the day before levels), we all sat there watching practice wondering how all these little ones were going to pull it together for competition season. A veteran mom said "They will be fine, you will think they are going to fall apart but somehow it always works out..." And she was right.
A extremely competitive team will have full team tumbling but it doesn't mean a team with just the required amount wont. Creative choreography can trick the judges into not noticing those couple kids without the skills. And if they hit clean? They can beat that team with maxed out skills. Give them time, by comp season they probably won't even look like the same team.
Honestly sometimes I think the whole "max out at the beginning of the summer" can be a ton of pressure on the kids to be perfect when it doesn't even matter, then by comp season they are burned out or blocking.

Every team at first has trouble at first, but eventually everyone will come together. It may take time, but if it doesnt work out the gym may decide to make them a lower level team
