I know my boyfriend mentioned that his parents wanted to get me something and that he wanted to get my parents something... I don't really know what's proper etiquette in this case though? Because if he gets something for my parents and I don't get something for his I'll just feel awk ya know

I have a feeling they will too - they're very generous people, always taking us out for dinner, etc. and refusing anything back for it. No clue what to get them though?!

ps. I'd get them something to save awkwardness  I'm thinking something token

What if you got them a gift certificate or something to one of their favorite restaurants that they can go to together and have a nice dinner with just themselves. Like a date. Or tickets to the movies? I know theres a stigma about gift certificates but that would be something they can do together.

That's a thing? Why would you need to get them presents? I've never expected a present from anyone my kids were dating or from anyone my siblings were dating.

I don't think it's "common" (my best friend isn't getting her boyfriend's family anything) but I am also getting something for my boyfriend's sister and mom. I probably wouldn't normally but I have gotten really close to both of them. It's basically like getting a present for my own sister (not that I have a real one) and his mom is basically my second mom.

ETA: Whatever I get for my boyfriend's mom will most likely be from me and him because he is the typical teenage boy who is awful at gift shopping...

I would highly look into it, most of upstate gets a lot of lake effect snows. Of course you could always call the school (NYCC right?) and ask the schools employees who live there what their opinion on snow tires are since they are their year round and will know the weather better than anyone. I say, if you can afford them, get them. Your life, your insurance rates, and your future is nothing to play around with. Winter can be a dangerous time while driving if you're not prepared. Snow tires can usually last 2-3 years too. You have to get them changed out for the non winter months but you should be able to store them around the garage/shed for the year like @CheerBank mentioned until you need them again.

I don't mean to sound doom and gloom about winter driving. It has it's good days and bad days. Just be prepared for anything. Upstate NY also has one of the best snow plow team I've ever seen in the northeastern US. They work day in and day out to keep the roads safe. They have plowing down to a science. It's really amazing.

yes, NYCC! I may take your advice and ask them! My current home has the opposite of lake effect... since i live within a mile of the ocean it keeps it slightly warmer and we never get the snow the rest of the state has. i've driven in snow plenty of times, but i don't mess around with driving in bad weather. if i don't have to go to class and if it's bad i won't even go anywhere lol luckily my apartment is 2.5 miles from campus, but i still get worried because of my lack of experience driving in it.

and to add to the significant other's parents gift convo - if going there for dinner or dessert or whatnot, i usually just found out their favorite wine and brought a bottle. nothing fancy, just like a "thank you for having me" type gift. pre-being 21, i've done the gift certificate to their fav. restaurant thing, too.

Girl you WILL have to go class in snow. Unless you plan on being off for months. There is no way to spend an entire winter season in upstate NY and not have to drive in snow. It's not like most places where it snows Saturday and by Monday you go toddling off to class, snow free.

You will need them - definitely plan on snow tires.

oh girl, i know! they don't have those underground tunnels connecting the campus buildings for nothing!! (though they tried to tell me that they are very liberal with canceling class - i don't think they realize NJ schools shut down at the 2 inch mark, not the 2 foot mark :p) and i know it's inevitable to drive in, but at least i'm not like traveling to class, just 5 miles total round trip on one very low traffic road (low traffic like i don't think i've ever been on that road at the same time as another car.) i am glad i went for the closer apartment. there was such a pretty one 10 miles away calling my name, but those 10 miles included a very steep uphill/downhill drive and being on campus and in class is top priority.

LOL... And the funniest part is that I'm STILL jealous that you get to go live there!

I was just lighting candles and, as I was lighting the second one I didn't notice that my ponytail had fallen into the first candle, until I saw flames in my hair and could smell an awful smell. Thankfully it isn't too bad, but I'm definitely going to need a haircut to fix the damage...

after looking at that ever so lovely glitzgirl website discussed in the uni thread it makes me pose this question..

why, just why would you want your gallery where your best products are supposed to be displayed in the best way possible to look like they were taken by amateurs or like girls were taking selfies of themselves in bad light.. (maybe im being super critical because i just dont understand this company to begin with) but i mean the lighting on one is so bad (in respect to the other poorly lit ones) it just confuses me, why would you even bother adding it?
late night ramble over.
