I wasn't exactly offended... I just felt that it feeds into the stereotype that cheerleading is an exclusive activity for only pretty, prissy people, which is something I hate. Like to imply, that a child doesn't belong in cheerleading because they don't like drag-face....

But personally, I cringed every time I had to put my then 8 year old niece in a teal smokey eye and red lip last season.

I cheered for over 10 years... and I find myself breathing a sigh of relief that my niece will not be cheering again until shes old enough for school cheer.

And actually I went to my little cousins gymnastics meet a few months ago...she wore lip gloss and shes 12, so I really...REALLY question the necessity of all of this make up for cheerleading,
It's unnecessary, I agree. I think you probably cheered at the same time as me though and remember how much worse it used to be. I had a silver lid lined with red glitter (complete with a wing) and 3 rhinestones that came out from the corner of my eye. Add the red glitter lip and I was drag queen overdone. At least THAT isn't the normal cheer face anymore.

My point was that when a cheerleader or even a basketball of volleyball player wears makeup and does their hair for practice it is visible as compared to the female hockey players I had that did all that work just to put a helmet on so nothing was seen.

The extent of cheer make up is probably unnecessary, but anytime you're on a stage with lights most people will need some to not look very washed out.

The extent of my competition make up was blue eye shadow....which I protested because its unfair to put a black girl in blue eye shadow....and red lipstick...which I refused to wear since it was a community tube they just passed around. I've never had a sticker or a rhinestone or a glitter lip... praise Jesus

I agree that its the extent of it all thats unnecessary

I've seen high school teams with beautiful simple make up.... Smokey eyes, complimentary blush for their skin tone... and a bold lip.

Its the all star make up that I feel goes over board... especially for little kids...glitter eye shadows... I just don't get it.

The glitter actually scratched my sisters cornea 2 years ago. She had to go to the eye doctor and have them remove glitter..

I think that allstar is slowly transitioning toward the look you described. Thank The Lord. I rarely see teams with the eye glue and glitter look anymore. When i do I kind of side eye them bc this isn't 2008. A lot of teams are doing a smokey eye (Cali, top gun) which is a relief... But other teams are somewhere in the middle with smokey eyes in a bright color (cough cough rain athletics aqua). Though now we have this "let's put a streak of glitter next to our eye" look that's becoming popular and overdone. Like they tone down the eyes to a shimmery smokey eye but then put the glitter to "highlight" and it looks ridiculous. The first few who did it knew how to do it right, it wasn't obnoxious, but now everyone is doing it and it looks silly.

When I cheered high school I did a smokey eye with my Naked Palette and wore red lipstick. The rest of my team wore their everyday eyeshadow which was very neutral.
No one else would wear the red lipstick but me though hahah I for some reason thought wearing it would bring good luck (plus I would wear it with everything if I could)

But do they practice on a stage with lights? I mean... My kids wear a TON of make-up on stage, under lights. But for practice... in the gym? Is there really a concern about looking washed out?

But yes, I agree. On stage, yes.

So... Onto new random stuff. (and old) - whoever asked about books. I just read The Kitchen House and it was reeeeally good. I'm starting Defending Jacob tonight - I'll let you know if it's good!

No, but I wasn't really talking about that...just cheer make up in general.

As for practicing in makeup. I guess I don't see it often enough to be on my radar. In our gym of 700+ all star athletes I've never noticed a kid under the age of 12 practicing in make up. Very rarely do I see anyone over the age of 12 in it. If it was the norm, I'd certainly think it was too much. I see more kids with hair dye and/or highlights at school or crop tops and booty shorts in the movie theater (other things that for young kids time/place is often considered unnecessary).

I wear makeup to the gym but it's everyday makeup, not comp makeup. If it's a Saturday morning practice there's a good chance I won't wear it (actually I'll put on bottom eyeliner and that's it) but during the week I already have it on from school so I just leave it. That's what most of the girls at my gym do (obviously not the 10 year olds, but the high schoolers). All I really wear on a daily basis is eyeliner, foundation, blush, and mascara when I remember. I suck at eyeshadow so I only wear it for comps.

I think it doesn't happen at big gyms as much? I mostly see it on kids that go to gyms I've barely heard of. And truthfully not usually on L5 kiddos.

(changed my mind on the book - reading Before I go to Sleep. Anyone read it? I've seen mixed reviews. Hoping it's good.)

CP14 despises makeup. I was surprised she put a little on for her brothers graduation from flight academy. She loathes the extent of cheer make up from the depths of her soul and hair bows....psssssht. My godCP10 wears a matching bow for every practice outfit she has.... Totally freaking adorable...My CP14 will wear them on competition day only because they're required. She's so ungirly :)

My 13 year old is make-up obsessed and can apply make-up beautifully. Her dream is to become a make up artist. Anyway, she/I get so many side-eyes whenever we are out and sometimes from relatives. She looks young for her age, but still. I don't see the big deal. Barely related to the convo, I know. ;) She doesn't wear make-up to the gym, but we have a local gym that requires it. *shrug* I'd be bothered by the expense, to be honest.

Here she is in what she considers a daily face...

She's adorable! I hope she becomes a make-up artist because my eyeliner did not look that good at 13! Love that she wants to wear red lipstick daily, I'm obsessed with lipstick. Remove the lipstick and it's exactly how I used to do my make up everyday, but after working at Abercrombie and not being able to wear eyeliner, I realized that I actually don't look as much as an alien w/o eyeliner as I thought. So because of that my daily is just mascara and blush hahaha.
