It's kind of funny because here in Maine like no one says ma'am or sir. I called a customer sir once and he got mad and thought I was calling him old lol

Yes! At my cousins birthday party we were talking about it and my aunt said she didn't like when people call her ma'am because she felt old. That's kind of what sparked the question and just because I've always been curious lol

I say yes ma'am if my daughter asks me a question. I don't think anyone here gets upset.

Now if you're in a restaurant, you're more likely to be called honey, sweetie, sugar, darlin', etc than sir!

The Fierce Board: If you're gonna be talked about, shouldn't you at least be here to defend yourself?

I have another northern/southern question. If I'm down south and I don't say "yes/no ma'am" or "yes/no sir" will people think I'm rude? Or no because they can tell by my apparent accent (real talk: Wisconsinites totally don't have accents!) that I'm not from the south? Just another random question I've always wondered about.

I say yes/no ma'am yes/no sir to anyone older than me, anyone I can't determine the age of, and anyone serving me at a restaurant.

I also feel like I'm being short or rude by just replying "yes". Like I HAVE to put something after it
When I help children and work and they don't say it to me I do notice that I kind of tense up because I do think its rude. I also am at the point where I say something to kids at work for not saying please or thank you.

I don't care about peoples accents, and I don't give people a pass for not saying any of the above just because I think they're from elsewhere

On the flip side, I also think that some people don't say it out of sincerity here....its almost routine so the meaning and respect behind it dwindles

I don't really say sir or ma'am unless I'm in trouble haha I also do it when I'm serving a table of significantly older customers, not like my 20 year old peers. I was raised to just always be polite so I say yes/no, thank you/call them by their title (Mr./Mrs./Coach/Doctor/Professor, etc.) plus last name, rather than yeah/nope/call them by their first names. I don't have an attitude in my tone or imply it to be disrespectful so I've never had a problem with anyone being offended that I didn't say sir or ma'am.

Yinz? That's interesting. One of my professors says "yous" and it drives me crazy.

Scousers say 'youse' (Scouse-noun, a person living in Liverpool, UK) as in "Hey! Youse over there, come 'ere".

On the whole southern ma'am thing; @cupieqt will tell you how freaked out I got by it when I was in the south the other week. Seriously, EVERYONE says it to everyone else, even parents to their kids. I just didn't get it and it made me feel sooooooooooooo old! Even coaching in her gym, the kids would say 'yes ma'am' and 'thanks ma'am'. Whaaaaaaaaat!!! My athletes just thought it was funny, it got a bit freaky for me!

one of my extremely good friends is from Virginia (albeit on the NC/VA border) and she is your stereotypical southern belle. you cannot tell me she is not southern. south of mason dixon line is the textbook definition of southern states. she yells at me because my long "A's" are rubbing off on her and i find myself naturally saying y'all in conversation too often for my own comfort. she makes one heck of a sausage gravy with biscuits though, so i keep her around ;)

for some reason i do not consider florida or texas southern. i just refer to them as florida or texas lol. florida probably has more residents that were born in NJ than Florida. and texas is just big. so it deserves it's own category :p

Why do I feel like every time I'm on twitter, a few athletes on a certain high profile team with a show is tweeting something in very poor taste/bad sportsmanship.

I loved them, and now I just have such a poor view because they come off as so rude to everyone.

...how did i never see this before????

I just want @Just-a-Mom and @chyeeaaa69 to know that I was standing in line in Dunkin Donuts for my free Monday morning iced coffee, when I glanced down at my phone and saw on Facebook that the "On the Run" tour with Beyonce and that man she's married to finally a thing with actual dates, and that the presale started tomorrow at 8am

I got so absolutely flustered that the lady at the register was like "Ma'm are you okay"....like I literally could not get out that I wanted cream, coffee and caramel....so instead I said "Sorry, I just found out the dates for Beyonce's tour"....and everyone working started laughing.

I'm shooting for Miami, Atlanta or Chicago because I told my Uncle that if it came there I'd come visit and allow him to come with me.

Tickets arent too bad either. 240 is the highest. I get paid the day they go on sale to the GP so I have to hope they don't sell out in presale

My boyfriend had a senior scrap book due today so we stayed up till 2 am finishing it. I thought large senior was this morning so I woke up early and now I can't go back to sleep :(

Yeah I was happy to see that. Although I wont spend $315 (the highest here after taxes and fees) on a ticket.

Esp. If I'm potentially going to have to pay for flight...and hotel...bleh

When is chicago? We are moving, so I am not sure if I should try to get tickets or wait...

And if you come to Chicago and I'm still here... we ARE at least having a cocktail!
