OT New Random Thread 4

This is not the first time I have felt like T&S has an identity crisis... I don’t want to “bash” them because it’s more confusion than hate-I just really don’t get it because the talent speaks for itself. You don’t need to rely on cowboy hats or “sexy” teenagers (insert barf emoji here) or a kids show to win or even stand apart from other programs.

It’s a real misfire for a Worlds team. Younger teams maybe, but even then it still doesn’t make any sense. It has nothing to do with cheer.

I like a good theme, but there’s definitely an art to picking one. You can’t just grab any random idea out of the ether and call it a day. A good theme should tie back into a program’s identity and ideally work on two levels. Or if that isn’t an option, it should at least somehow complement the sport of cheer.

For a team like Diamonds, it’s a little more difficult because their team name is already a theme so they’ve pretty much cemented themselves into it forever. They could maybe broaden it to jewelry/gemstones/treasure, but they’re stuck with diamond-something from now on. Nothing else would make sense for them. As we’ve seen today.

You're not necessarily locked into a theme because of a team name.

Ex: WCSS is named Stars and has had more than star themes - from salsa to fashion to Lady Gaga.

I think 19/20 showed me that it's time for themed routines to take a break.

I haven't even been impressed by WCSS last few themes and that says a lot because I loved them earlier in this decade and they are the team you expect to execute a theme super well.

I wasn’t crazy about those WCSS themes for all the reasons I mentioned. Jersey Girls, cute. Lady Gaga...meh.

But if this Dora theme sets the tone for the rest of the year, then I do agree maybe we need a break. (Although I read that the theme means they’re exploring the “world” for “gold” so... that’s slightly more thoughtful than I initially assumed. Still a stretch though.)

Lol ACE's 2004 country theme, East Elite's faith/religion and time/wait themes, Green Bay Elite Lime's broadway themes, Cheer Dynasty's Hairspray and gospel themes, Georgia All Stars wedding theme, and many others beg to differ.

A lot of those teams went to worlds.

You can have any (age-appropriate) random theme and make it work. Some people just dont do a good job of it.

Lol ACE's 2004 country theme, East Elite's faith/religion and time/wait themes, Green Bay Elite Lime's broadway themes, Cheer Dynasty's Hairspray and gospel themes, Georgia All Stars wedding theme, and many others beg to differ.

A lot of those teams went to worlds.

You can have any (age-appropriate) random theme and make it work. Some people just dont do a good job of it.

I think the age-appropriateness of Diamonds theme is what is questionable, not necessarily the use of a random theme for a Worlds team. I love well executed, appropriate themes, but some are just very confusing, like this one.

I think the real question for me is the why. WHY do you need a theme? At this point, it's overdone and rarely stands out in a good way. Let the skills speak for themselves. Please. I can't take another poorly done mess of coaches trying to make motions and formations that fit your "theme".

ANOTHER ROUTINE I WAS VICTIMIZED BY - THE ACE TEAM WITH THE ALADDIN THEME AND THAT GIANT FABRIC THING.

I also remember being rather disappointed by the WCSS NYC themed elite stunt because it starts off with so much difficulty with the toss/ball but has no difficulty in body positions because it just awkwardly torches twice at the "statue of liberty" part. I know it was supposed to resemble the statue but there was so much potential!

I mean teams can do any theme they want. Doesn’t mean they should.

I think it can help a team stand out since the skills kind of blend together these days. I remember themed routines more, but that’s just me.

Also, to me it always suggested a touch more thought was invested into a routine because back when you could still use actual music, a themed routine meant sitting around and thinking of appropriate songs instead of just falling back on the usual, one-size-fits-all cheer music. It’s a bit different now with all the cheer music producers, but back when I was cheering a theme made you pay attention more because you knew the attention to detail that went into it.

This. The only theme/prop I can remember that complimented the routine (with the exception of some of TGLC's over the years) was Ace Warriors pom poms and WCSS Lola during their dance. And if I were a team that basically had a world championship in the bag and lost it solely because of a theme/prop gone wrong I would never even consider doing one again. I just don't get it.

I find these OMM types of people to be a bunch of pervs. They’re SO concerned about others do in their private lives, it’s sick. I’ve been to a Weho Halloween, but it’s these people that make me think, “That’s really inappropriate.”
