So my mom is planning for comp season. The majority of are comps are one day, and she is saying that we should just leave Friday or Saturday (depending on which day I compete on, sat or Sunday) and stay in a hotel there, so we don't have to drive super early (most of our competitions are a few hours away)

I explained that not every performance time will be super early, and she says that it'll be nice to have somewhere to put our stuff and sit. I think it's not really necessary, but I'm an athlete, so would you ever do this for a one day comp, parents?

If you didn't go up the day before would you go with your team on a bus? Just asking because here in England we have buses to take us to the competitions and I really enjoy the journeys there. On the other hand not having to wake up early and travel a long distance sounds nice- plus I feel a lot less stressed when I have time to relax in the arena/area I'm going to be??

I don't think we have a bus for our gym, normally most just travel with a parent. I think it would be fun though!

Depending on when you compete, you might not be able to have your stuff at the hotel room unless you get it for two nights.

Any competition that is over an hour I will book a hotel room. Traffic is awful traveling into and out of town for us no matter what day of the week it is. This is the downside to living in a vacation destination. There are also late night/early morning freeway closures to contend with. I'd rather stay at a hotel near the venue so I don't have to worry about being late because traffic is particularly horrific that day. Competition days are stressful enough as is.

As an athlete I am perfectly fine with being up early or travelling home late, I am probably the biggest night owl ever. Most of my comps are about 3 1/2 hours away. But from my mum's point of view she doesn't like driving much before 7 am and coming home after 6pm. We also like to stay an extra day and shop sometimes too, as it is in a big city, and we are from a small city. We get our performance times about 2-3 weeks before we compete, so we see when we are on and then decide if we need to book.

If I'm driving more than 2 hours or if the weather is potentially bad, I spend the night. No need to add that stress to CP's day--or mine.

Depends where we are going. Cp prefers driving down the night before if it's a comp the gym is not using a bus for. This way even if she has a late start she relaxes all morning. We then typically do drive home right after the competition is finished.

Cp has only competed level one, and was a mini for the first three years, so yes, we always went down the night before. 7 am call times, are really early! I get too stressed trying to travel in the morning for anyplace but Trenton, which is only 30 minutes away.

This is pretty much what we do, except our gym doesn't use buses.

Most of our one-day comps are local, but we do have two one-day comps that are out of town. The first is about two hours away in Orlando, and the other is an hour away in Daytona Beach. We will drive down to Orlando the night before the comp and stay in a hotel, and then we'll drive home after the comp. For the Daytona Beach one-day comp, we will drive down that morning and drive home after it's over.

It's a lot more relaxing for us to be there the night before, because it's stressful enough the morning of the competition without having to stress about traffic, too.

Driving there for me was a lot more stressful, you never know if there'll be traffic or something crazy and end up late. I also liked hanging out in the hotel with friends. One of my favorite parts of cheer. Another thing was I liked to be there to watch all of our teams and waking up, getting ready, and heading to the arena to see it and watch teams was one of my favorite things, too.

Distance and time play a huge factor for us. When CP was at her gym in Missouri, we always went up the night before so we didn't have to drive in the morning. She was either a Tiny or a Mini so she always had an early report time and because of our location, the drive was always at least 2 hours. When they did an exhibition 2 hours away, I cancelled our hotel room because non-CP got sick and I didn't want to leave her overnight so I drove CP the next day---she was fine, but I about died on the drive home from exhaustion! That is when I learned 2 hours+ is when we look at hotels.

This year we're about 90 minutes from Lakeland, 3 hours from Tampa, 4-5 hours from Jacksonville and 90 minutes from Orlando. Every comp in Tampa and Jacksonville already have hotels booked along with one Orlando one because it's a 2 day. We'll drive for the rest including the showcase which is 40 ish minutes away.

It's too stressful to drive the day of because you can't predict traffic.

ETA: Also, as a mom---maybe she wants to spend some time with you. You may not think it's cool or necessary, but it's great one-on-one time with her that you'll always remember. Make the most of it and try not to give her a horrible time over it! Sorry---that's the mom in my talking ;p

If I had the money I would get a hotel for every competition. Our closest competition all season is over an hour. Last year we drove it even though it was a 2 day and by Sunday I was exhausted. Cp always wants to watch all the teams so she wants to leave as soon as possible. If there is any chance of bad weather we will go the night before though. Last year at battle under the big top in Cincinnati there was an ice storm early Saturday morning and it was super bad. Luckily I went up the night before and stayed with my aunt and only had a 20-30 minute drive. My friend who drove from home took 6 hours to get there! ( usually takes about 2.5) If money isn't an issue then I say go for all the hotel stays you want.
