Good question. I don't think I've ever known a gym to have a structured open gym. I have always known it to be where the kids could go in and work on anything they want

hmmm ok i didnt kno if any group activities were ever done
Maybe not a bad idea to have something planned for those do not just want to go and work on their own.

Kind of like an optional activity or challenge.

If it's hot, maybe have 1-2 hours of open gym then invite everyone to stay afterwards for water balloon fights, bobbing for apples, relay races involving water, slip n slides, Popsicles, etc. Fun and inexpensive activities to cool down after working hard at open gym.

No gym we've been to has had set activities for open gym; kids have had free reign with supervision.

Off topic warning:
There is a story behind this and now I am curious...hmmmmmmm

For our younger kids they've set up something like a circuit where the kids go from station to station and can work on different things at their own pace. It gives them something to focus on if they want to, or also allows them the freedom to go about things on their own entirely. Some days Lil Bits will do the stations and some days she prefers to be on her own working on things.

Depending on which coaches are there, our gym has also done a circuit thing to help improve tumbling. It seems to appeal to the younger kids and to kids who need their BHS. I think it is a great idea.

:fro:At the previous gym that I worked for we did Free play with tumble traks, trampolines, cheese pits, etc... We also do organized games: Dodge ball, Stunt outs Tumble outs, If arm/hot outside water activities: Balloon tosses, slip and slide, we have had Dance off's, etc..... The kids are wanting free time, but you can make it Fun, as long as the kids are up for the activities, but you Need to pre-plan things and switch it up if what you planned doesn't work, always have a back up.....

Our open gym is completely open and targeted to kids 13+. They feel the younger kids aren't focussed enough to do an open gym without direction, and they're worried younger kids may be trying stuff they're not ready for and either hurting themselves or building bad habits.
