With a sewing machine or needle and thread?

I use a needle and thread. I have been thinking recently that maybe I should just put the needle through once (at the top), scrunch the center, then wrap the thread around-rather than sewing through the whole thing. It's pretty difficult (and time consuming) on the ones with several layers of ribbon.

Doing it this way, I can do about 8-10 in an hour (one the ribbon is all glued in layers and dried).
I do it in stages. One day I'll cut all the ribbon/fabric. Then another afternoon is for gluing the layers together. Then I let the dry for 24-48 hours. Then I'll spend an afternoon "tying" them.
