All-Star Summit Ring For Ransom

I hate to say this, but it sounds to me the gym is not holding the ring for ransom, but found a cost effective and speedy way to get money $$ owed to them....I like to call this LEVERAGE!
Unfortunately-
Yes, contractually the ring belongs to the gym until all money owe is paid...

In the same way that I am perfectly okay with a gym making a child sit out of practice until tuition balances are paid (not the kid's fault, but effective), I am perfectly okay with a gym holding on to things like rings or jackets won by the child until balances owed are paid.

The Summit was the last competition of the year. You should have paid everything you owed prior to that point. I'm sorry that your child is having to wait on her ring because you did not fulfill your obligations.

I can think of a few reasons off of the top of my head. First of all, the cost to individually ship the rings would be very high. Bundling them into 1 package and paying 1 fee is much more cost effective. Second, what do you do about athletes who move between gym registration and ring shipment? It's easy to say just call and change your address, but logistically that's a headache for all involved. Third, can you imagine the nightmare of dealing with multiple lost shipment claims? I only throw that in because my mail delivery stinks and I have to follow up often with companies who use the post office for shipment.

This a great point as we dealt with this getting US Finals jackets. Comp in April, just got jackets yesterday when they were supposed to be shipped in May. Already enough of a headache, can't imagine if we parents had had to deal with it instead of the coach.

I agree with the gym here. It may not seem fair, but in general it's something you should be aware can happen. Like @SarahS said, there are usually other negative consequences for your CP when you're not paid up.

Get your stuff in order to prove you don't owe what they say. Nothing else you can do really, since you stated you do owe them something.

The following is a link where you can purchase a replacement, however, it still must be approved by your child's coach and it is $175. If you paid, show your receipts. If you didn't, then it looks like your child is the one that suffers.

In conjunction with what @catlady said, I think the problem I have here is that the child is also involved becuase it is the childs ring. Regardless of adult matters such as bill paying and accounts thats between parent and gym. I feel there are other ways to go about collecting on past due balances then taking something away from a child who earned that ring fair and square.

I'm thinking the gym did everything they could to collect this $$$ during the season and was unsuccessful, therefore, had to use this ring as their insurance policy. Gyms have to front the $$ for the late paying customers in order to get their merchandise/order uniforms or practice wear for the people who paid on time or register teams for competition. They did that on good faith because you signed their financial contract agreeing to those expenses. Why should they get stuck with this loss?

My advice is to get your checks and receipts in order and make an appointment to sit down with the business manager and go over your account. Once you're paid, your child gets their ring. Simple.

Also, I don't see The Summit being very helpful to you. If I had to guess they do not want to be in the middle of a dispute between both their customers....you and your former gym!!!

Agreed. Summit is the last competition of the season. If there were amounts due the gym owner should have said "sorry, you are not competing until your account is settled". The gym used the athlete to their benefit and the athlete earned the ring.
Don't get me wrong - nothing bothers me more than people who don't pay their bills, so I sympathize with the gym owner if that is the case. But the amount was likely due before the Summit, so if the athlete was allowed on the mat then they should receive the ring they earned and other means to collect the money should be used.

I feel like gyms have to do what's best for them also, it isn't fair for them if someone isn't paying their bill, I know if I was past due I would have a hard time showing my face at the gym and asking for the ring. I know we all go through hard times but I feel like if there was a dispute about money it should have been handled before the Summit. I mean the gym might have been a little frustrated if they think you owe them $$ but you guys went to The Summit, I've personally haven't been to The Summit but since it's Disneyworld, I'm sure it's cost a lot. At the end of the day I hope your cp gets her ring because she is the one the suffers the most out of this whole thing.

Just curious. What type of bid did you get for Summit?

If you can PROVE in black and white that you do not owe any money then you should be able to collect the ring by providing documentation that you have a zero balance. However, if you can't prove it in black and white with receipts then it's your word against their accounting system which means your CP probably won't be getting that ring unless you pay up....

On a side note, I wonder if the gym would've still withheld said ring if your CP remained at the gym and didn't leave the program (zero account balance or not) ?

I'm surprised you actually got to go to the Summit still having a balance with the gym. The gym that my cp went to Summit with last season, wouldn't allow anyone owing a balance. They were replacing people who owed.

An agreement has been reached and my daughter will get her ring. With that being said, there was never an intention to leave and was always a plan to pay, just a dispute regarding the amount. I was simply disappointed that a gym owner would use a child's ring as weight to push around. Thanks for everyone's comments.
