All-Star Training Athletes From Other Gyms

Our old gym had a policy that their all star athletes could not take tumbling classes or any other classes at gyms that also had an all star cheer program. it was in the contract.

We have athletes that travel an hour + to get to practices, my cp being one of them. Our owners tell us they don't care where we tumble as long as we do. It really only helps our gym in the long run. We had a little girl on one of our teams last year that didn't come back to tryouts this year and when we spoke to her about it she said she wanted to get her tumbling back and only works well with a certain tumbling coach from a rival gym. This gyms policy is that you cannot take tumbling from them and cheer for another allstar program. I was told it was to minimize the recruiting to our gym.

My CP was taking classes at two gyms in the off season to decide where she wanted to cheer. She likes tumbling at gym A but felt gym B was a better fit to cheer. She was upfront with both gyms and gym A told her if she goes to gym B to cheer she would no longer be welcome to tumble there. That's too bad. They would have made a significant amount of money in class and private tuition.

Our gym is way to far away to go for privates and classes. We tumble with a coach that has beem working with my daughter for over 2 years (pre new gym) It works for us and it works him and our current program has no problem with it. It's a win win for all!

I feel that you should be able to train at any gym. When you open your doors to other athletes you open the doors to many opportunities you may not otherwise have. Not only is this a great business move on your part but parents tend to respect you as a gym owner and or Coach for taking the time and teach their kid if you are about the business of training athletes and are all about the kids. Every Coach should be proud of their ability as a Coach to have a child go out and represent what skills you have taught no matter what program the child came from it's about your ability to teach. I hate when I see kids turned away because others feel as though they may lose kids as a result. I see it as keeping you doors open in this economy who can really afford to turn away money no matter what size your gym is.

We have a 2 good gyms not far from Texas Cheer and they do not allow you to train at thier gyms if you are a "Texas Cheer" cheerleader...

One gym just told a child on my daughters team since you didn't sign up with us and your staying at Tx you can't tumble here anymore...

But kids from those 2 gyms come tumble and play at Texas Cheer all time time. Guess that's another reason Texas is just better ;)

At our gym, if you're with a school or rec it's ok. Like if you cheer a school that we do choreo for, but you cheer for another gym, it's ok. In turn if you cheer for us and your school practices elsewhere, it's ok

Wow !!!!! this is one of the reasons why doors are closing not a very smart business move

I agree with the majority of responses on here..not very smart to turn away a paying customer, especially a paying customer that can tell people exactly where they learned to tumble and give you some advertising as well...it's a business and if you want to look at your empty pockets at the end of the day, i'll go to the gym that welcomes everyone whether you cheer there or not.

i dont think its wrong to help athletes from other gyms jsut because youre helping 1 kid/athlete from another gym doesnt mean its making the team as a whole better.. (1 athlete doesnt make a team) :)

Open Gym is just that Open Gym. I am sure any of the other 2 gyms close by will be more than happy to take the money for Open Gym with a smile on their face.

I coach at gym A and gym B is our hugest rival. We have had several level 3/4 kids from gym B tumbling at our gym the past couple of weeks and the owner of my gym has had no problem with it. I think it's a smart business move for the owner. Especially since these kids have all commented on how much they like the classes at our gym.

If you run a great gym and program, I would think that you would love to expose new kids to your program in the hopes they may decide to switch.

I think that the only gyms that should be afraid of other gym's athletes coming to their classes are gyms that are uncomfortable or not confident about the services they provide.

Terrible and not smart at all! Why would anyone turn away potential athletes? I think it's not very good sportsmanship either - helping kids should be the goal regardless of where they choose to cheer.

I don't understand why a gym wouldnt want the money. Even if they are are on your rivals team, what are the chances that the child you are instructing will really make a difference between the placements of the two teams. If that child ever wants to move gyms down the line, you can be sure they wont be back to the gym that denied them lessons. Some people just dont know good sportsmanship

I also had a similar problem: when I was cheering, it was a 2 hr or so trip each way (4 hrs total). SO not making that trek every time I wanted to tumble. If I had a just-as-cheap option closer/easier to get to from where I was, I would have taken it (and I'm pretty sure my gym wouldn't have had a problem with it ;) )
