NACCC: Attention: All Star Coaches, Athletes and Families

The members of the NACCC, along with Les Stella and Jim Chadwick met on a conference call Thursday to discuss the actions of the USASF Board and the new rules they put in place on Wednesday, March 28th, 2012. Specifically, concerns were addressed to the new limitations of tumbling skills allowed in Worlds Divisions.

The members of the NACCC are all gym owners and coaches. It is our goal to share the voice of not only ourselves, but also that of our colleagues and athletes. It was a general consensus that the way in which these new rulings were decided and then communicated (or lack thereof) fell out of line in the vision of the “voice” of our industry.

Three proposals were drawn up, which will be brought back to the USASF Board for their consideration of compromise. Please keep in mind that the USASF rulings and the new NACCC proposals of compromise have been created with the best interest of our athletes at heart. Although many disagree with the rulings handed down on Wednesday, it is our duty to remain professional and communicate our opinions in the appropriate forums. We appreciate and value the opinions we have heard, and hope that the integrity of our sport will thrive forward.

I think there are quite a few people like this. :) I'm glad she found something that works for her. Its frustrating to me that the "higher ups" are using something like counting braces to back their rash decisions...

I wouldn't assume it's true because someone on the internet said it.

I saw this in Powers FB page and wonder why try don't say what the 3 proposals are, I don't know why it is secret.

Given the recent events and the industry-wide reaction to the way USASF managed the first round of rulings, I also would have assumed that these proposals would be published prior to the decision-making process.

I wonder if the "powers that be" that are aligned with Varsity and the USASF realize the reputation they have? I have heard the issues with the Varsity-controlled USASF (the "governing body" of all star cheer) being a monopolizing, money hungry, industry killing, beast for years now. When the USASF/Varsity board, that was formed around the same time as the NACCC (coincidentally), tried to consume the NACCC, I believe it was because they felt they were in the best position to guide all star cheerleading in the right direction. I also believe they knew that all stars was a cash cow because at that point we already had enough amazing and HUGE all star gyms to have one big bad giant competition devoted strictly to their highest level teams (gyms just bursting with people itching to spend more and more money on this newer, more exciting side of cheerleading). And then guess what happened? The popularity of all stars soared. Money came pouring in and Varsity seemed to be snapping up spirit related companies left and right (and continues to do so with recent "cheer media" acquisitions). Varsity ceased to be a company and became a brand. A brand name cheer business. And who doesn't love a recognizable brand name? The USASF doesn't realize or doesn't care that they are not viewed as a governing body but as another Varsity brand that we can slap by our gym name and call ourselves "legit". Those of us that are out in the trenches fighting to make things right for our kids and TRULY drive the sport forward should be the ones setting the rules and policies.

I wonder if "old man Varsity" realizes that all stars has evolved into something so far removed from the cheerleading that launched it, that it cannot be controlled by anyone but the TRUE leaders of the all star industry---which is the NACCC. Not the USASF/Varsity brand, self appointed governing body.

The USASF needs to know that that the NACCC will not be silenced and WILL be our voice for our future.

Someone made mention of, believe it or not, a Penn and Teller show about Cheerleading that was a real eye opener about this exact situation. Everyone should watch the 2 part show on YouTube! It's language isn't appropriate for kids and tries to make it funny but the underlying information makes it worth watching all of it even if some of it isn't PG-13.

Do you think that kids sometime just get comfortable wearing the brace? I have seen some kids wear an ankle brace for an entire season. I highly doubt that their doctor said it needed to be worn for 10 month for that rolled ankle. I think counting braces is not the same thing as counting recent injuries..

Yes, they get comfortable, my daugther broker her ankle when she was 11 and she is know 16 and she still wears a brace on her ankle. She also tore her ACL in September and she has never worn a brace on her knee. She is tumbling and doing level 5 skills. She has also decided that she is only going to tumble no allstar 2012-2013 to ensure that when she returns in 2013-201 she is a 100%. I really hope they allow her to perform the skills she is taking the year off to ensure her technique is correct. Removing the skills from competition is not the answer, ensuring that the kids are required to do strengthing and conditioning would go a long way in eliminating some of the injuries. Football players spend their off season strengthing (weight lifting) and conditioning. Why can't cheer???? Why not make it requirment.

I saw it a while back. It's pretty funny actually. The language is rough, but it's pretty informative. The thing that was the biggest eye opener for me was that they said to get certified through the USASF only required a 3 hour course, followed by an open book test. I feel like they should also have to get a certain amount of hours of hands on training signed off by a gym owner that is confident in their abilities

Just because there is a brace on the floor doesn't mean it happened at cheer.

Also doesn't mean that if it did happen at cheer, that a level 5 athlete with a brace received the injury performing a level 5 skill...
Further, people seem to be forgetting that braces don't always accompany acute injuries. Sometimes an athlete needs a brace for chronic skeletal/musculoskeletal issues.
The whole "I see WAY more braces on the floor than I should" thing is tired. It means very little to me.

Fact is, is that I see JUST as many, if not MORE, running and standing skills to tucks than the elite skills. So why limit ONLY the level 5 skills? The fact is is that you can throw a skill dangerously at ANY level doing just about ANYthing. The rules proposed and the manor in which they were "proposed", "voted on" and "passed" is all just ludicrous, inappropriate and...well...to be simple...DUMB.

I would recommend not mentioning skills that are more dangerous or equally dangerous to the skills that have been taken out. Don't want to give anyone any ideas.

Id like to put out there.... from MY experience... Most of my injuries happened OUTSIDE of cheer. A lot of kids in Missouri run track. Shin splints, rolled ankles, etc. Other do volleyball and various other sports. Heck, some even broke legs and arms wrestling with their older siblings. Just because there is a brace on the floor doesn't mean it happened at cheer.

Thank you! We lost a flyer this week who has a broken collar bone. She walks out to cheer the team on and people assume she got hurt in cheer, no...she got plowed straight through in a soccer game. We had two broken arms last year from kids falling at school, a broken collar bone from a playground at school, a broken leg (one of our Tinys) from tripping on a toy at home, we looked like the walking wounded for a good 3 months and none of those injuries...or related braces people are wearing now, had anything to do with cheer.

We had a very scary brain surgery on a youth2 and the poor thing was in a coma for over three weeks...that had nothing to do with cheer and everyone assumed it was a cheer head injury. No. THANKFULLY when her vessels hemoraged she was at the gym with our parents and coaches that quickly got her medical attention and she was life flighted to the hospital. Her parents will even tell you cheer saved her life. If she hadn't been with us, she might not have come home 72 days later. Shes doing AMAZING now. She even decided she didn't need that wheelchair anymore and refused to use it any longer a few weeks ago :D The doctors told her she didn't need it, but after months in it, she was comfortable with it. At 10 years old, SHE decided she didn't need the "crutch" and she's getting stronger everyday because of it.

On that note...braces drive me nuts. If there is a medical reason for it, by all means wear it as required by your doctor. But, our athletic trainers at school are very clear that after your injury has healed and you're still wearing the brace, you're actually doing more harm than good. If your body doesn't need it then bracing your joints, tendons, muscles etc. actually keeps those joints, muscles, tensions etc. weaker since they are hindered from strengthening back up and more so since they can't strengthen and be worked proportionally to the opposite joint etc that isn't braced.

My son is wearing a patella band for his knee but that's only because he's grown 9 inches in 18 months. He regularly tried practice without it and really only wears it when he's got growing pain ( and he gets that big with how fast he's growing) in his joints. If it doesn't hurt, he doesn't wear it.

My advice from our training staff (and the example of the bravest 10 year old i know) if you are cleared by the doctor and don't have their specific requirement that you wear it any longer...lose the brace before you reinjure a weaker joint.
