I feel like letting your program speak for itself only works for experienced cheer families. If you're brand new to the sport, you go to the gym that brags the loudest, regardless of how truthful the bragging is. I know we did. Now CP is at a different gym and they truly do let their program speak for itself. No cryptic social media posts, no defensiveness.

Actually I've found that when you are brand new to the sport (really any sport) you tend to go to the gym that is closest to your house. It is only once you gain a little knowledge that you have a better idea if your program is truly the best fit for you/your child.

I'm very curious to know how common this is. I've heard of it in dance, especially to attract boys, but not so much in cheer.

I have to agree. When CP started we didn't know jack squat. Being in NYC made it that much harder to find a gym. We went to what was essentially our only option (or so we thought). We lasted 2 seasons and then the gym closed. We ended up in Jersey. When we figured out that Jersey was where we were going, CP was adamant about going to the MEGA gym in our area. I convinced her to at least tumble at Star until tryouts then we'd figure it out. She completely forgot about Mega gym after being at Star after about a month lol. I was ecstatic that we would not be making the commute to Mega gym.

That is ridiculous. What federation are you referring to? Are gyms owned by or subsidized by the province? The gym is not paying you, rather you are paying the gym for a service. This is like telling a consumer they can only change where they shop 6 months after their last purchase at another comparable store.

Gym A must have a solid reason not to agree. I have never heard about any problem related to transfert policy. It actually protects gym A in case an athlete wants to cheer elsewhere and still owes money.

Our federation doesn't own any gym but you have to pay a membership to compete at their competitions. You cannot get a bid here if you are not a member.

In our province one of the rules is that in order to switch to a different gym after already having been registered with another, you have owe nothing to the original gym. If you do owe money to them, you must pay it before being allowed to switch gyms.

I honestly think this should be an official rule for everywhere - you shouldn't be allowed to just bail on hundreds of dollars of payments towards Gym A and just go to Gym B without anyone signing off.

Am I the only one who finds it bizarre that the government has jurisdiction over private business practices?? I mean, in the U.S.,if someone violates a contract or owes money to a business...there are civil remedies available through the court system. Most Americans would bristle at the government telling them they can't change to a different service provider.

Nope. I would have a major problem with that, but I have a major problem with a LOT that is done in Canada and much of Europe. We in the US are not used to that level of government intrusion in our lives. It is accepted as normal in more socialist leaning countries. They control and regulate a lot of things that we in the US do not.

They then put rules in place and what not that are voted upon. So say someone that went to your gym switches gyms and owes you money, you file the complaint through CNB. The government has nothing to do with it, unless I'm just misunderstanding what you guys mean. My province is one of the smaller ones, so I'm not sure what the other provinces are like.

So who enforces this if you don't comply? Just the sports governing body? That kind of restrictive organization wouldn't survive for long in the US. I don't know of any youth sports organization that hold you hostage for 6 months AFTER completing a season.

Ok, I'm glad the government isn't involved! I still can't see something like that working here...business owners are fairly independent and I can't imagine there wouldn't be some rogue gyms who would challenge that business model, create their own EPs, and operate outside of the "Federation," (sounds like some Dystopian novel!) :)

Sounds like they can't if they want to bid to Worlds. They have to be a part of that federation.

Same. People on the board are owners and coaches. Rules are voted by them. NB might have been inspired by QC because the rules seem very similar.
