I’m torn. I can see both sides of this. But I’m leaning towards performance should count, at least for some points.

It’s not just about smiling. It’s about being sassy, showing energy, looking like you enjoy being on the mat. Maybe I’m slightly partial bc this stuff comes naturally to my CP.

To me, those are things that should be in every routine because it makes them fun to watch. It should not be something that can cause you to win or lose. Skills, actual real life skills that are NOT subjective, should be what wins.

But if energy & sass should be in a routine but is not scored at all, then will it?

I have never been an over the top sass fan.

I would actually like to see folks make body positions great again more so than flyer sass.

For example: If you are going to a stretch - the count is hit ONE.

It is not - Hit 1 YANK 3.

Stop taking 2 counts to go to stretch by yanking it back. You should hit the stretch where you're supposed to hit it initially.

I am using a very general count but someone has to understand what I am talking about.

Also, scale legs/knees should not be bent. Hit that straight before you pop your chin or make a sassy face. Pls.

Then also arabesque is more than just extending of that back leg after you needle but before you double down. Chest should be up. Leg placement. All that. Example: I think BSB does them well.

Then you can sass me.

I understand. My pet peeve is seeing a flyer do a heel stretch like that during a tick tok. Like girl just grab your heel correctly. It looks painful.

i totally get where you’re coming from. When performance doesn’t count for anything how long will it be til our precious sport becomes another version of Acro where it’s just kind of a straightforward demonstration of skills. That’s not super fun.

y’know I was thinking about this last night when I was rewatching some of the worlds performances and I actually love it when the performance is built in to the choreography. It’s hard to explain but think Cali Vixens or Lady Pros back in their prime. There’s something about that style of ‘motion-heavy’ choreography that I find very visually appealing. Like controlled chaos where there is a lot of performance but it’s coordinated. Idk if that makes sense.

Omg yes. I don't know why this became such a popular thing. I guess it's easier hitting your stretch lower and then "yanking" which results in you only having to hit the full stretch position for a second. This yanking stuff probably started to emphasize flexibility, but now it often seems used to try to cover up a lack thereof. Either way, give me a normal stretch please.

What will they do otherwise? Look like they are working hard?

I don’t even know how much “performance” counts for right now... Should a team with high level skills well executed win over a sloppy team with good energy, sass and some smiles? No.

But if 2 teams are pretty much the same, then I think the team that’s more fun to watch should win.

Watching teams with good high energy performance factor was part of the reason CP & I fell in love with cheer. I think if it’s not scored, coaches won’t encourage it and it will become rare to see.

It doesn't have to be cheesy, over-the-top smiling and shaking your head like a bobblehead, but looking like you care about your performance should matter at least a little bit. It doesn't even have to be smiling, it could just be moving your body with confidence and authority.

I could do without the stomping and some of the other ridiculous gestures I've seen kids do that make them look angry more than anything. Some flyers who are in a prep for a long time during a pyramid try to fill the excess time with ridiculous posing and excess sass. Sometimes it's better to tone it down.

This made me think of lady bullets 2013 worlds performance where the center flyer in the pyramid did this weird gun motion body roll thing where she was like shooting the whole crowd meanwhile her bases are struggling to keep her steady with all her wild movements and the rest of the time she was like fluffing her hair and doing all kinds of over the top stuff. I look back on that stuff and just laugh. I’d love to see stuff like that get replaced with a skill that’s equally as fierce.

Around 2013-2015 was when I felt the struggle begin. The USASF was putting in place cover up rules and then full tops, and I feel as though the creepy adults of the industry revolted and Peg Bundy came out the winner. The line was definitely crossed and it became obvious that certain adults enjoyed dressing, making up, and encouraging Niki Minaj type performances with children. I do feel that it has greatly improved, but still has room for improvement.

The Olympic gymnastic score sheet takes into consideration "composition" and artistry" in the execution score, I think that's reasonable. Katelyn Ohashi while being interviewed said (I'm paraphrasing), "Floor is about joy, pure joy and I want everyone to feel it." She's an incredibly skilled gymnast, her dance execution is lacking, but she's able to draw in the crowd with her smile and energy, and that to me, is what execution is all about.

ive seen this being discussed lately, cant recall if its been brought up here. But again the scoring system dont make sense, and now i see this at summit and now it makes even less sense. Why allow multiple level 5 teams do the same transition but not lower level?

I heard not 1, not 2, but a total of 5 teams get the same deduction!

Didn't they win NCA with the same transition? You'd think there would be consistency between the two biggest Varsity events, but who am I kidding.
