Ok I'm going to pretend today didn't happen and also pretend I'm Marta and pick my Worlds seven. (It is seven, right?)

Simone
Gabby
Aly
Maggie
Kyla
Bailie
And then a toss up between Alyssa and McKayla

I could live with that. I'm not opposed to Brenna Dowell going either. TBH we could just send Simone, Gabby, Aly, Bailie, and then three randos off the street who are age eligible and still win gold.

Simone's vault is just amazing.

When I heard about Maroney and all her troubles I felt really bad because I know how much she wanted to go to Rio; but they don't need her with Simone's vault.

Exactly. I was her biggest fan and wanted a comeback more than anyone. But at this point Simone would probably beat her on vault and she knows that. Heck, she outscored McKayla's perfect vault last night even after the amanar was devalued in 2013. (On domestic judges of course, but still) The struggle of being a single event specialist.

I know she wanted that Olympic gold so badly, but you can't beat the best in the world if you can't even beat your own teammates.

Can we also send that runner up girl from the handstand contest or nah?

All of this, sadly. I loved her spunk, and I hate that she's sick, but the reality is she's not even training presently and it's basically too late.

My heart also dies a little for Kyla; she's so good, but I agreed with the commentator's---her height is problematic.

@SL&AM, what is problematic about Kyla's height?

She is very tall and doesn't have a lot power. You can see on her tumbling she is kinda slow and she is tall for bars and it's makes a problem. But I really really doubt she will make it to Glasgow. She had a fall at every major meet this year (Jesolo, Secret, P&G ) but Marta loves her and she only care how good you are at camp so this might change something.

Also...Biles fall on floor. What the hell?

@Nikaa, I think being tall is not the problem in Kyla's case, she probably not utilizing her size to her benefit. Kyla is only 5'2" which if you compare her to that Russia girl, Svetlana Ch?, who won a gold medal on bars in 2008 Olympics and she created all those different and innovative dismounts off the beam and innovative release moves on the bar. Svetlana was not a strong tumbler or powerful gymnast, but she became more of a graceful, flexible and technical gymnast, which even helped her on the floor too. Kyla Ross needs to work with her body type and not try to be, what she cannot be, a power tumbler and she can be successful on the Rio team.

She's naturally tall (for gymnasts) and doesn't have the same difficulty as the other girl's. Her beauty is her technique, which is mostly solid, but when you're 5'4" tall (which sounds tiny until you compare her to like Shawn Johnson who is 4'9") she doesn't have the extra room to do the extra turns. Gabby Douglas, for example, has a similar build but is also only 4'11" and while Aly is 5'2" she has a lot more muscle and power than Kyla.

Nastia is about an inch shorter than Kyla and being honest, if Nastia was competing now, I don't think she would have gone to the Olympics for the same issue. Graceful with great technique isn't winning anymore---you have to go big and bigger, which neither have much wiggle room on because they loose so much with their height.

He Kexin won gold on bars in 2008. She was about as teeny tiny as they come.

Kyla is listed as 5'4. Svetlana is 5'5. She won gold on UB in Sydney and Atlanta, not Beijing. She also came in second on floor in Sydney and second in the all around in Athens--so I don't think it's fair to say she's not a strong tumbler. It's a completely different style from her era (96-04) than in today.

I don't think the heights for any of them have been updated since 2012. Gabby clearly isn't 4'11 any more, she's Aly's height if not taller, so I would say 5'2 1/2 ish.

I'd also guess that Kyla is closer to 5'5-5'6 since she and Makayla were 5'3/5'4 in 2012.

Everyone except for Aly has clearly gotten taller over the last 3 years.

I hate it for Kyla, as much as I like her and as much as I appreciate her consistently competing since London, my heart won't be broken if she's replaced for worlds.

And for comparison. Here is Kyla next to Ashton Locklear, who is 5'4

Kyla is relatively tall for a gymnast (I think she's taller than 5'2" as well) but a big issue is how quickly she put on that height. Most of us can vouch for how hard it was adjusting your tumbling as your body changed. Imagine that x100 swinging around bars and launching yourself off vaults. That's ALL about body awareness. I've seen her catch her heel on the bar several times in the past few season.

Svetlana Khorkina looks like a giant but is really only 5'5", probably similar to Kyla. Svetlana hit her prime on bars at 19 and 23, when she won Olympic gold. You're pretty much done growing at that point. Kyla was 15 at her first Olympics, and the bodily changes are much greater between 15 - 19 than 19 - 23 so the adjustments are probably major.

After watching her last pass a couple of times, it seemed as if her right arm had a mind of its own and just decided not to tuck in at the end. Notice how it's extended outwards? It looked as if it was an involuntary action because gymnast of this level don't just "forget" how to execute a tumbling element.

I noticed that and wondered if it was a purposeful change. I went back and watched floor at Secret Classic and she stayed wrapped the whole time. It could just be me but her back handspring before did not look nearly as powerful as it normally is.

It'll be interested to see if she stayed wrapped tomorrow or extends the arm again.
