Yeah I refuse to applaud her gymnastics. She got lucky this time, but the fact that she hasn't fractured her spine yet is nothing short of a miracle. She (9 times out of 10--I think she's only actually landed that vault twice in competition) is not ready to perform that vault and her coaches are irresponsible to let her try.
She pops up in every damn vault final because her start value is so high that she outscores others even when she sits it down. Which happens every. single. time. I'm so scared for her. I legitimately wonder if she lands in it practice. I guess she must be, or maybe her coach just doesn't care.

I know this is crazy, but I got to say it... When I watched this type of risk taking from these athletes, it borders more on desperation for recognition. For the longest time, this world of gymnastics depended on and had the 4 usual suspects- USA, Russia, China and Romania and in many ways the judging can be very subjective and slanted in favor of these countries, unfortunately. These athletes and coaches from these smaller countries are pushing the envelope to even the playing field.
Tbh, I wonder more about why these athletes must perform these extraordinary routines and why they feel they need to take such dangerous risk? Honestly, would we even be talking about DR or Egypt had they only performed equally high difficult routines that all the big name countries athletes also perform. Hmmm???

@Pebbles49 we talk about North Korea and Hong Un-Jong--she won the Olympic gold medal in 2008 in vault and is the reigning world vault champion. Her Amanar is just as good as anyone on any of the "usual suspects" teams, and her Cheng (?) is among the best in the world. I also don't fear for her life every time she steps on a vault runway, unlike Yamilet Pena. North Korea is clearly not a major sporting power, yet she's a fairly consistent medalist on the world and Olympic stage. (North Korea was banned from international competition in 2012, so that's why she wasn't in London.)

We also talk about Claire Martin, from France, whose balance beam is gorgeous...as well as Eythora Thorsdottir (from the Netherlands), who is basically Soviet-level graceful on the floor. Their routines may not have the highest difficulty, but they are *beautiful* and well executed. (see, also: Annia Hatch, originally from Cuba, who won vault bronze in 96 for Cuba and had she been allowed to go to the Olympics would have probably excelled there as well. She eventually moved to the US, married an American, and competed on team USA in the 2004 Olympics.) Giulia Steingruber, from Switzerland, did very well at the European championships and won three individual medals including gold in the all-around.

Gymnasts who have talent will be recognized for that talent, regardless of how small the country is. Countries like Canada and the UK are producing fantastic WAG teams and individual athletes, and their slow build-up of talent is finally starting to pay off.

I don't know why Yamilet Pena's coach allows her to attempt the Produnova vault. I wish he wouldn't. Her Yurchenko-style vaults are certainly decent and I don't fear for her life every time she does them. She is a talented vaulter--on vaults she's actually capable of executing. This isn't one of them. We could be talking about the DR in the same way we talk about Hong Un-Jong or Giulia Steingruber--but until Pena's coach mans up and does some actual coaching, we're simply going to say a prayer Pena doesn't break her neck trying to "push the envelope."

@gofriars, okay, okay! You convinced me, these young ladies are crazy and may need to be train by different coaches. I am concerned about the parents of these athletes, have they given full reigned to these questionable incompetent coaches...Do we have possible ABPD situations in these cases?

I think several men can do that vault much better, but their landings are still a little squatty just cause of the nature of the vault.

That little girl from Brazil at these games is so amazing (saw the coverage on TV) - her presentation on floor was so good and her beam was just wow.

I don't think the athletes themselves are crazy--but they definitely need higher-quality coaching.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean by the second part.

Is there a video of Pena's vault from these games? I would like to see her actually come close to landing it once.

I caught the tail end of the girl from Brazil last night and I agree.

how much she's cheering still scares me. she really must just celebrate not dying.

does she not get docked for the hair tie on her wrist?

Someone also had white toe nail polish, and it was very visible. I don't know if those rules have changed either.

Ha on a slightly off-topic note, has anyone noticed the commentary at Pan-Ams has been...kinda uninformed? They were gushing about how amazing it was the girl representing Bolivia "got to train in America" like she was a dang Make-A-Wish kid...so I googled her and it turns out she's a level 10 gymnast from Texas Dreams who was born and raised in Plano.

(This reminded me a bit of the opening ceremonies from the Sochi Olympics. When Team Ireland walked out, the announcers were like "oh yes! none of these people actually live in Ireland.")
