... alas, no elite gymnastics competition at an international level is complete without some controversy regarding score discrepancies. Did Steingruber's second foot step out the performance area? Should Mustafina been credited with a Gomez instead of a Memmel for her leg hold piroutte? We'll never know.

All three routines were beautiful. I'm not sure what the rule is (does it need to be the entire foot, half of the foot, or just some of the foot?), but her heel clearly was out of the white line on the slow mo replay IMO. Her tumbling was a lot more powerful and high than Mustafina's, but Mustafina controlled her landings much better (wow is she good at landings). The girl who got bronze needed more tumbling passes IMO - think there were only 2? Doesn't seem like enough for an elite routine to me (it must be legally okay cause she did really well, but still).

Mustafina adding turn right at the end is hilarious. She is the boss :D I love her. But not more than I love Komova. Komova is my girl.
I love Mustafina and all, but that last pirouette at the end made her look like she was grasping at straws in an attempt to boost her D score. She didn't allow her routine to breathe at the end, making it feel cluttered. Otherwise, it was a beautiful routine.

I'm sad Komova didn't make finals for any of the apparatus, but hoping she can power through towards World Championships come later this summer.

I believe you only need a minimum of 3 tumbling passes, I'm not sure how she got away with 2...

In regards to the out of bounds - I believe as long as any part of the foot, even if it's just 1/4 of the foot, is out then a penalty should be incurred. Though, we have to remember the judges award scores/implement penalties according to what they can see live..... no playbacks unless the coach of the athlete in question comes forward... and no coach would want to argue for a heavier penalty on their athlete's score.

You need a backwards salto, a twisting salto, a forwards salto, and a double rotation salto. She did that with the double back (backwards + two rotations), a front aerial (forwards), and the last pass was a twisting pass.

Granted she'd get killed if she were competing against Americans, but she hit the bare minimum.

Anyone see Aly's nude shoot for ESPN's annual Body Issue magazine?

All I can say is HEART. EYE. EMOJI. TIMES. A BAJILLION.

She's so beautiful - inside and out.

ETA: It's not suggestive, even if it is nude. It's actually very well done. I commend her for her bravery to do such a thing and her wonderful message.

This isn't directed to you specifically just using the post as a jumping point. I am having a debate with someone over these photos. I am willing to bet if these same photos had appeared in Playboy the general public consensus would be outrage and "I can't believe this money grubbing tramp sold out for nude photis". I could care less if anyone poses nude, and I agree the pictures are cool and she is beautiful, but she still did the exact same thing other woman get crucified for doing yet now is being considered brave. And I would buy the argument of doing it to show "body flaws" more if she wasn't airbrushed and photoshopped. Although there are some differences in body positioning versus what you typically see in Playboy, she got paid to pose nude. Some mastermind at ESPN just got people to buy in that it is "art" versus porn.

"You are only responsible for being honest, not for someone else's reaction to your honesty."

I get what you're saying. I don't know how to change the way people think though. Our society, in general, is way too judgmental about everything. No one can be praised without someone else being extremely critical of them.

Personally, I don't really care who poses nude and under what circumstances. If it's something you wanna do, go for it. We all have the same bits anyways - I don't see why the human body is so taboo in western culture anyways. (I partially blame organized religion.)

But in aly's case, I like that it showcases the fact that she doesn't have a typical feminine body. She has a very athletic, bulky, muscular body and she's comfortable with it and it looks the way it does so she can do what she wants to do. I think that's a great message to send to everyone.

Also, IMO, anyone who poses nude in playboy, ESPN, or even goes to a nude beach is 700% braver than I am. I am not that comfortable with my body and I'll applaud them lol.

As for the photoshopped part, you wouldn't believe how many things come across my desk to be photoshopped these days. And I'm not just talking about people. It doesn't make it ok but it's the norm and as much as I'd like to see it changed, I don't think it ever will. It's really astounding this fake reality we all chase after.

I don't think they would allow Maroney to petition into camp or that she really has a shot at Worlds this year. I think if she were able to regroup and get it together to start attending camps after Worlds 2015 she would have a shot at Rio. But she would need to be great on all four events, at least three, because she won't be taken to the Olympics for just vault again.

I think Raisman looks great in the Body Issue, but how about Tyler Seguin eh????

The Pan Ams subdivision the American women are competing in begins at 10:45 eastern (45 mins from now). It's being steamed on Watch ESPN/ESPN3 and highlights will be shown tonight on ESPN 2 between 8-10 eastern if anyone is interested!

I watched on the app. USA crushed it obviously. Really impressed w Rachel goweys beam! Amelia stuck out to me too, I'm liking her more and more. I do not envy those picking the worlds/rio teams. At all.

Oh and non USA, that DR vaulter is insane. And her reactions after her two runs were phenomenal. Hope they show that on the highlights tonight so everyone can see.

Agreed with Rachel Gowey on beam. That was beautiful.

However, I really don't think that DR vaulter should have gotten the score she did, sit or not. Her reaction was amazing, but I don't believe that landing warranted it.
