I'm not sure why Gabby gets a bad wrap for mo what chasing or any gymnast for that matter. That's what they do popular artists grab all then sponsorship opportunities they can. LeBron does is but for a gymnast it's wrong? If I was her I'd grab every single money making opportunity that comes because that's so rare for a gymnast

The culture of Gymnastics is just that it's sooo NOT about money and a big financial payout at the end - that's probably at the complete bottom of the list if you surveyed serious gymnasts on why the do the sport. And fame would be next to the bottom.

Gabby and her family just give off a vibe that the payout WAS part of their motivation - relocating to LA, reality show, made for TV movie about her story? I don't know - that stuff just seems less about giving back to the sport, and more about cashing in. I know Nastia sells leos and charges money for appearances, but she also puts her name on meets that give a good portion of their proceeds to charity, etc. Or maybe she just has a better manager or something because she doesn't seem to be about the money and fame to me when Gabby does.

Nastia gives off more of the vibe that Gabby and having heard from people that have met her real life only confirms that. I don't think the family set out for fame. There's just no way any of them would have come this far if that was their single motivation. Olympics was their goal and I can't fault them for grabbing every opportunity that comes their way. I will say Gabby does seem like feels she owes her family a lot seeing as her mother went bankrupt and their siblings went without their activities for her gymnastics which may motivate the constant endorsement activities. The movie was a little much but her story just made it an enevitable. And any publicity they do receive actually does help the sport. Gymnastics is already a popular activity but few people pay attention to it outside of the Olympics.

Yeah but it always seems like it was Gabby's family and not Gabby. Like it's clear that Gabby's priority was being in the gym

They sacrificed a lot for Gabby, no doubt and plain and simple they were poor, so I feel like Gabby feels like she has to repay them because none of them seem to have much else to offer to the world that wouldn't net then a regular ole job

Gymnastics is an expensive sport, and families sacrifice a lot for the kids to participate but TBH if you scroll through the insta grams of some of the National Team members, they're posing in front of Jeep Wrangler and BMWs and their houses have pools. I'm not accounting for what's in their families checking account, but outwardly it appears that the sacrifice didn't bankrupt them

Which Gabby's mom can't say. So if there is a desire for money I can't necessarily say i blame them.

There's still so much more I have to say, like how the Dutch couldn't send a full team due to injuries and not wanting to risk the team further with Rio approaching, Afanasyeva not exactly in good condition and only being able to do vault (if there's no Afanasyeva in floor final, did the floor final really happen?) and Kim Bui being healthy again; kicking butt on uneven bars:

I mean WOW that routine is packed with connections... and this is just Euro's WAG, I won't go into U.S. WAG since we have enough discussion on that here already.

It's amazing how after so many years, she's just as confident as ever in her abilities. She's just one of those gymnast you can never not like... I hope the best for her. Here's a little montage of one of her well-known dance element over the years:

UGHHH YAAAAAS! I saw this one too and her 2004 winning routine flashed before me. Such a beautiful gymnast!

Also, if Kim Bui connected that Bharwadj to the Van Leewun (spelling check?), she'd score better. Her execution just needs a few touch ups and that's pretty much it

That's true that it is more her family and not really Gabby herself.

From the looks of that home the mom and siblings have in CA on the reality show, I guess their days of poverty are long gone.

And when you watch the reality show there does seem to be this underlying vibe of guilt/obligation that seems to come from Gabby towards them. It's actually kind of sad now that I think about it :(.

Yeah but the house is probably rented by production

They've been I'm that house for a while I think. Or judging from the Instagram something really similar

Yeah but they've been filming for NBC Universal for over a year, and out in LA working for networks on some capacity since the Olympics....so to think someone isn't giving them living stipends....meh

I was skeptical of the TV show only for the drama it seems that surrounds Gabby's family at times. The only time I ever judged her was when it was rumored she was being a brat to Chow when she decided to start her comeback.

I thought the movie was cute, and I doubt she shopped around for producers to make a movie about her life. She was a black girl who came from very little money who managed to not only make it to the olympics, but win gold. It was a modern day Cinderella story.

She and Simone have the same contract with Nike so if you're going complain about one, complain about both. I think it seems odd to the gymnastics world because it's so small. In basketball/football/baseball there's hundreds of "elite" players and when a handful forgo NCAA status to sign million dollar sponsorships it's no big deal. In gym, we're talking about tops 10 girls a year and majority choose to keep NCAA eligibility. That doesn't make the ones choosing to be compensated for their hard work any less than the others.

I think you just nailed what was bothering me. Okay, so Gabby herself doesn't make me squirm. But the idea of parents cashing in on their kid's success does. I'm not saying that kids who are extremely successful should ignore their family like "begone peasants," but I find it uncomfortable when parents are epically scoring through their children.

This being said, I'm all for gymnasts endorsing products. I don't have a problem with their contracts.

I have absolutely no problem with any gymnast doing whatever they can to take make money and get a payout for all of the sacrifice and training they have made during their childhood, and I think you will see more gymnasts taking advantage of financial opportunity. They can't compete in college and there is no professional gateway, so their options are very limited. I haven't cared for Gabby's family since day 1 - I think they are using her and will bleed her dry.

Some highlight floor routines from Japanese Nationals last weekend:
Mai Murakami

She needs to hit like this for a chance to be on the podium at Rio!!

Kenzo Shirai

This guy twists faster than I can count 1 to 4 out loud...
