In a sense, yes. (I assume you are talking about Champions League - I don't think the others are "gym owned".) However, the competing teams are all essentially in the same boat. Each gym "owns" a similar portion of the event as the teams they are competing against. Also, no gym has anything close to a controlling majority ownership of the event itself.
To clarify, I wouldn't have any issue at all if a company hosted a competition specifically for it's own gyms. (ex: Varsity hosting a Varsity-gym competition)
This is true. However in most other sports it is common knowledge. Also in most other sports the governing body does not have direct ties to the EP.Just to throw this out there...this is very common in other sports. Example: Virtually every dance competition my daughter competes in is run/put on by a dance school also competing there, with the exception of regional, national, and world championship events. They dont use their own judges. They pull from the same list of judges every competition uses. If it wasn't done, no one would have anywhere to compete. There are no event producers for irish dance.
Is the issue the conflict of interest, or the lack of transparency? (Sorry - I have read this whole thread, but it was a while back and I didn't reread tonight) I do agree that it should be readily available information - it's very clear when you go to a feis (irish dance comp) who it's being put on by, and who is competing from the host school.

I agree that it is a bigger concern. However, I believe it is possible to work on more than one concern at a time. It may be a long time before USASF becomes free of most of it's VB entanglements - other stuff can be worked on in the mean time, IMO.This is why I used Irish dance as my example (well, that and the fact that it happens to be the example I knew enough about  )
I think a bigger concern should be the governing body having so many ties to so many things. In Irish dance, the governing body is only the EP for regionals (true regionals - only about 4 in the country I think, and you have to actually go to the one for your region), Nationals (also "true" - there is only one), and the World championships. Local competitions are done by the schools. But the governing body does not own any dance schools, nor do they produce costumes, etc. - nor are they affiliated with any companies that do these things. I think getting the USASF to have less ties to the other side of the business is a bigger issue than gyms also being EP's.

thread hijack - i'm so jealous of your IDP. one of my childhood best friends did irish dance and her family would always bring me to regional oireachtas and i would beg my parents to let me wear a wig and get a pretty costume :p. you'd think if your dad plays the bag pipes and cursed you with the world's most irish name they'd let me dance, but i guess not. they never gave in. :( i will now vicariously live through you and IDP :D
I agree whether we like it ir not, there not going to stop and were going to keep giving the competitions our $It is worth noting that I don't actually believe that NCA or other Varsity events are rigged. If we believed that, we wouldn't spend 100K a year going to their events and buying their products. I also don't expect them to sell their gyms just so they look a little less "Big Brother". I mainly wish they were much more up front about who they own and control.
