In an unrelated topic, I will say that moving cross-country (over several trips) is not the most fun thing to do right now. Currently in Virginia and mildly worried about getting back to Texas this weekend.

I can say that in NJ counties have been communicating that all summer camps/programs/fairs have been cancelled (not postponed). Governor Cumo has cancelled all summer camps and programs in the state. I question if parents will take their athletes to the gym for practice if their schools are not even open yet. Some schools have made the decision to be virtual for the remainder of the school year, which in NJ is till the end of June. If my child is not permitted back in school, not sure I would be taking them to the gym for practice, let alone getting on a plane and traveling to FL for a gathering of tens of thousands of people?? While this is a difficult situation for so many, the focus has to remain on the safety for ALL, not just those in your immediate household. I keep going back to Governor Cumo's comments around saying home and how not adhering to the mandate may not directly impact you or your immediate family, but you may infect someone else. He asked everyone that "if they can't show discipline for themselves, to please show discipline for other people. If you get infected and infect others that have to go to an emergency room, you put a burden on an already overtaxed health care system who you don't have the right to burden with your irresponsibility. We all have a responsibility, we all have a role in this, and the role that we play is a societal obligation. It's not about your life, you don't have the right to risk someone else's life and you don't have the right to take a healthcare staff, who are putting their life on the line and be cavalier or reckless with them, you just don't have the right". I watch his daily Corona Virus updates and while his statements may seem extreme to some, they are factual. NY is the hardest hit state in the US with NJ right behind them. If strict proper safeguards are not put in place in other areas, you too will be the next NJ or NY. Strong action must be taken to prevent the spread to other areas because if tough decisions, disappointing decisions are not taken, other states will become the next NY and NJ!!

I know its 100% first world problems, but I had a very detailed plan including 2 very, very large/expensive trips planned for this summer before finding a job/permanent place to live in the fall and I feel like it's all gonna fall apart. Definitely stressing out about it all, just really want my trips to go through as re-planning them would suck. But as I said, much larger problems in the world right now.

I get that. I feel bad for being out of my own daily routine, then I remember there are starving people living in the scariest pandemic in a very, very long time.

I think it’s okay to be upset and mourn our own losses, as long as we don’t start feeling badly for ourselves. Keep it all in perspective !

At the risk of sounding punctilious, I just want to share in the midst of all the COVID talk that there are no “cures” for viruses. (See: HIV, influenza, etc.) Vaccines, yes. Cures, no. We can only treat viruses with supportive or palliative care to take some of the stress off the body while the immune system attacks the virus on its own.

Just FYI. I’m seeing a lot of news about “There’s a cure just around the corner!” and it bugs me because that’s impossible. I know these posts are probably referring to the word “vaccine,” but the two terms are not interchangeable.

There are some possible treatments, plasma or drugs. I know it’s not a cure but they might work to help save more people.

I can only really speak to our gym- we can run a modified schedule and have less than 30 people in the gym at a time. Schools have to account for having hundreds going through the hallways and cafeteria etc. So school and cheer gym are 2 drastically different situations

I guess I'm looking at this all from an international view.

You will not see international travel freely for a while. I think that having thousands of people in a space that have traveled from all over (even within a country) is probably somewhat irresponsible. I'm trusting the experts who indicate there will be waves of this, that we (at least in Canada) will be under distancing through the summer and potentially to varying degrees for all of 2020.

Please remember that not everyone is in America and that how each country is handling this is very different. I haven't heard the term "shelter in place" used from any government or health official, so I don't really know what that means. We're asked to stay home, travel only when essential (groceries, essential services jobs, medical requirements etc), and work from home if possible. We are not allowed public gatherings of more than 10 people, and there are fines for violators, but in my province, no one has actually been fined or warned to date. But also, nothing stops you from going out every day, shopping or anything. That also isn't something that can be fined, its just ignorant.. We're one of the least impacted provinces (as of today 224 total cases, 76 of those recovered, 11 in hospital including 5 in ICU and 3 deaths), and today our Chief Medical Health Officer stated that even though our numbers are 'low' that the physical distancing we're doing is still required and will be for several months. School is over for the year in most places. Today it was said that when this is 'over' we will gradually return to a normal, but if something spikes, we're right back to where we are now.

I somewhat understand the economy, and I understand that there are cultural differences between countries regarding their economy. The idea that thousands of people could be at events by the fall after traveling from all over is, in my opinion, far too risky for the long term. Cheerleading is not essential. The economy of cheerleading is not essential, although it will feel that way to Varsity, gym owners and other vendors. Do I think everything stays shut down forever? No, but coming back too soon to regular life carries a lot of risk as well. We all want things to be 'normal' but that's unavailable for the foreseeable future.

Yes, treatments are available like they are for all viruses, but cures like antibiotics are not. Antibiotics treat bacteria, which are living organisms. Viruses behave like living organisms but ultimately are not, which makes them difficult to cure.

Arkansas is not allowing hotel stays now, FYI. And I’d suggest not staying in hotels on the Memphis side downtown because many of the health workers in the hospitals are staying there to quarantine apart from their families and near the hospitals. I suspect the same is true in other big cities.

We saw that and have decided to not stop. There are 4 of us driving, so between the 4 of us we should be ok rotating through. We've done it before, not ideal, but probably our best bet right now.

oh same. I’ll still be with the same company and they said that they can be flexible since we’re working from home. But I was supposed to be there now looking at apartments and I feel SO anxious moving to a new city with no family during a pandemic. Like you said though, it’s definitely first world problems, but it is very anxiety inducing

Like @XtremeWpg just stated, here in Canada Trudeau just announced that these measures will most likely be in place until early spring of 2021. There is next to a 0% chance that Canadian teams would be at a Worlds taking place in June.

The fact that Varsity thinks worlds could even be possible in the month of June is absurd. I can't really blame them though, our government has been extremely transparent with their plans and projections.... can't say the same for all corners of the world.
