All-Star Csp Tweet: No More Travelling For Cea Teams.

Back in Australia (where I'm originally from), there's a HUGE gap year culture, and at most schools it's pretty normal to take a year off before college. Most travel, but some work for a year and play sports/do other activities while they're still eligible for a school-aged team. Some put college off indefinitely and return a few years later with no trouble.

I think it's a fantastic idea to take some time off. ..The problem is that taking time off of college is so much more difficult here in the US, not just because of university policies which aren't often friendly to gap yearers, but also because we pay full fees, so cheering as a super senior could eat through college money. In Aus, the government pays for half our tuition costs...

A friend of ours from church is from Norway. Apparently in most of Europe, taking a year off is normal as well.

It's extremely common in the Scandinavian countries. Which is kind of weird, since we get paid to go to school. As a college student I get about $350 a month and have an option to lend more money. There's no tuition for most colleges.

Exactly. And because it's so common (and often actively encouraged in schools), it's so easy. The college policies work around it so well – usually you earn a place, then fill out a quick online form and your spot is held for a year with no chance of losing it.

It's just a lot harder in a country where gap years are uncommon and college is full-fee.

What is common to spend in one season to be on a "Worlds team"? (Not including parents' travel expenses)

^^^I would presume that it depends on a lot.

Ex: If your gym does NCA, All Star Games, Worlds, and Majors, that looks different cost-wise from one that does NCA, UCA, and Worlds.

Factor in comp fees for those.

Also: Is your gym within driving distance of some of these? Do you fly? Hotel stays? How long? Is the comp stay-to-play?

Then there's regional comps. How many regionals? Are they the kind that require hotel stays? 1 day/2 day?

What kind of attire costs does the team have? Factor in one uniform. Some have more than one. Some have them paid for by the companies, some don't. See also: Major comp practice wear. Do you get new practice wear for NCA/Majors/CL/etc? Is it paid for? No?

Choreography costs. Those may be more expensive than lower levels.

Regular car travel. How many days of practice, tumbling, etc. do you have? That = how many days you need to drive. How much gas are you using?

Food. You have to eat on the way to or from practice and while you're at comps. Do you eat out? That costs money.

In short, just stop counting.

And get a gofundme.

When my CP was in cheer for her alone probably about $5,000 (our team travelled together so calculating cost is easy).

Edited to add - if we didn't fundraise - our price tag would be $500 - $700 higher.

I was lucky enough to look for sponsors - so in the end i actually paid less.

Let's throw out numbers to guess, and see if anyone can confirm.

My guess is 5K-7K. 1-3 uniforms, custom warmups, travelling 3-5 times for comps, blingy practice wear, matching outerwear, tuition, privates, jump classes....

My mom added it up my senior year. Roughly $10k, with everything added up. I was on three teams that year.

I don't think she ever factored in my two major injuries my senior year, which were a pretty penny too.

I loved when I cheered at Twisters and I easily paid over 7k with the comps and travelling and hotels and the tuition and most of all gas because we drove 1.5 one way to the gym...and that was with one uniform and not being on a worlds team yet. When I moved to canada my moms wallet definitely was happier and when I was on a worlds team I coached which lessened my cost since we only paid half tuition a month and uniform was taken off of coaching pay, thank god! It scares me to think about how much I would have paid to be on a worlds team if I had stayed in Maryland :/

In addition to GSSA and Duel in the Desert, there's USA in Anaheim with 2 FP and 4 AL, and Aloha Sacramento with 1 PP and 1 Al.
I do agree with you on the Northern Cal situation . There are plenty of worlds teams up there who have no option but to travel 6,7,8+ hours (driving) to even chase a bid.
Even for those in So. Cal, in past years there has been Anaheim and Palm Springs. The others were in Sacramento and San Jose which were 6-9 hours away without traffic. However, I guess GSSA is moving to LA this upcoming season. That will give So. Cal three bid competitions within a 2-3 hour drive.

Another interesting item to factor in:

The amount of money spent cumulatively on privates and classes to GET the skills to MAKE A WORLDS TEAM.

Ex: Has anyone ever calculated how much $$$ in privates was spent to get their child to a full? Or to get from BHS to tuck to layout to full?

Is that too traumatic for folks?
