What are people's opinions on fitness in cheerleading? Alot of the time kids are thrown into skill training without having the fitness and conditioning training to make them strong enough to do the skills. Not just kids though...skill is SO important in cheerleading and sometimes the time to build general strength and fitness is forgotten about. When teams are training at a really high level conditioning is something that naturally occurs, however sometimes I think its real important for teams of lower levels to concentrate on fitness so that they can progress to the next level safely and in the best possible way! Anyone else find they come across this a lot?

I think that all teams condition regularly without even realizing. Some might do it as a part of warm-up so it becomes and regular thing and some get super fit from doing lots of jumps, full run-throughs etc. Some gyms had specific conditioning classes but I think it's better to incorporate conditioning into regular training so athletes can't avoid it, therefore benefiting the whole team in the long run.

We require a conditioning program through the off season and summer for anyone cheering Varsity competitive. I know this isn't always the easiest for most highschool coaches but weight training and conditioning is essential.
