My point is that ALL THINGS BEING EQUAL (which lots of people seem to be overlooking) the smaller flyer is easier to hit with, and the being small definitely makes it easier to be the flyer who looks good in the air.

Rarely are all things equal. I don't have an issue with a smaller flyer being used if she is actually the better flyer. my issue comes from when a better flyer is overlooked in favour of a less skilled but smaller flyer.

I haven't seen that happening, and I don't understand why any coach would shoot themselves in the foot by putting a poor flyer in for a good one.

I didn't state that younger flyers were less skilled I stated that older flyers have more experience simply because older flyers have often been doing it longer. That doesn't mean that younger flyers can't be just as talented and I'm sorry if my post made it look like thats what I was trying to say.

Older flyers haven't always been doing it longer ether. Often, particularly on lower level senior teams, the younger, smaller flyer has more experience

This thread has me:deadhorse:and :banghead:. So.much.arguing and I'm trying to figure out what all the fuss is about. Coaches put the best flyers in the air and the best bases on the ground. I hardly think they look at stats and bring measuring tapes and scales to the gym when making their position selections, but generally speaking, the smaller you are the better the odds are that you are going to be a flyer and the bigger you are, the better the odds are that you will be a base or backspot. It really is that simple!

Ok I get all this but what do judges see.... You have team a out there with senior girls basing itty bitty 10 year old 45 lb flyers. And then team b basing true senior flyers who are say between 80-100 lbs or whatever but senior size and look like they've gone through puberty (lol). Would the fact that team b's flyers and bases have to work for that stunt be better in the technique department ... Whereas team a's bases can pretty much one handedly keep that 45 lb girl up and if they can't I mean cmon. She's 45 lbs. I would be side eyeing you if you dropped her.....

My CP is a 10 year old flyer. She is small, but not 45 pounds. My 5 year old son is 45 pounds. My ten year old is very muscular and weighs 70 pounds...which is about the average weight of a 10 year old. But your comment did make me giggle when I thought about a senior team basing my 5 yr old.

To the dude who brought back this 2011 zombie thread by randomly posting a video of his kid flying,

I really hope you're happy with yourself. We added 40 pages of arguing.

We all should be walking in shame today. lol

Like, seriously, can this thread die already? I promise I will never ask that my back spotting precious unicorn be a flyer!

So she should have about another 2 years of flying then based on everyone's .02 on flyer size/weight/height ;)

Serious question then- You have a senior 4 team and only have 1 spot left. You need 1 more flyer. Here are your options. Choose 1.

Girl A, 15 years old- Was on senior 4 the past two years. Has all the tumbling and has always been a flyer. Girl A grew 4 inches. She is now 5'5 and an appropriate body weight for her height. She is still flexible and has great body positions but is one of the tallest girls on the team. She has never based before.

Girl B, 12 years old- Came from junior 3 after working very hard on her tumbling skills. She has a layout and is working on combo passes. She is both a flyer and a base. She is 5'2.

Girl C, 9 years old- Came from junior 3. She is also a flyer and is naturally very flexible. She has strong body control but lacks in tumbling. She has a tuck but no layout. She would be the smallest on the team.

The answer to this question would (in my eyes) depend on how maxed out I was in tumbling.

If we were still in need of strong tumblers to hit the scoresheet, then A.

If we are strong on tumbling and I can add some specialist type kids in who maybe do not have the tumbling, then C.

I told our owner, after getting a packet to fill out for youngest, that at least I'd never expect her to fly. My now 6 year old is just under 70 lbs, very muscular and very tall for her age. Her 7 and a half year old sister is actually the shorter of the 2 and weighs 40 lbs soaking wet. Amazingly enough, youngest would love to fly and never will; eldest hates flying with a passion and is gonna have to.
