All-Star Gabi's New Gym And Team Announcement 7/6/15

My guess is, it's being considered an investment into the gym. Let's be honest---her family isn't poor and Gabi has likely been putting a lot of the money she's been making away for later things. My guess is it's coming from all of that above.

However, I still stand by my opinion that it's tacky to advertise it like that. Especially this late into the season when plenty of LVL 5 kids have already gone through choreo with their teams and now might be tempted away with the promise of a tuition-free year.

Scholarship-ing might not be free tuition. Could it maybe be free practice clothes or uniform? You'd lose a lot of money for a first year gym w/o awhole team's tuition so maybe they'd just take care of some practice wear or uniform costs? Just throwing that idea out there!

Give away the top to attract talent and possible to have instructors for the gym. It isn't a bad plan as L5 doesn't really make money anyway.

Whether true in this particular case or not, it is something USASF needs to keep their eye on. Athletes leaving to go to a winning gym across the country is one thing but athletes getting paid to be on a team changes the scope of our sport/activity.

I hope this isn't true; as a parent with a younger child in this sport, I really, really don't want this to be the direction AS cheer is headed.

I really want to say something kind and supportive... but does she not remember booking it to Cali after a month at trinity, even with the $/perks trinity offered? like did you learn nothing? buying all the talent in the world doesn't automatically make a team "work."

All of these "incentives" are starting to make this whole gym sound a bit too familiar ... odd similarities to... Trinity...:oops:

I didn't read her announcement because the font and size is just too small for me to read but I did see she's opening up a gym in Daytona.
The only areas of athletes I could see getting hurt by this is Jacksonville and maybe Ocala/Gainesville if they're willing to drive far enough for this team. In all three cities, there are no open 5 teams. Tampa (Brandon) is about 3 hours away and I believe Brandon is still having Steel. Orlando is about 2 (I think) but of course TG TGIF is there. And then Miami has 04 and 005 from TG and both those teams have begun. I know there are a few small colleges that compete intermediate at NCA that might be some help in building numbers that are out of the Daytona area.. But I honestly just see this as 'Gabi and her friends' open coed 5..

it's definitely intended for this season. when she made the announcement at first she said they would have this team this year, and then expand the next year.

the only comment I have is that I could see this being a decently competitive team only because of her friends in the industry, as well as the name attached. being on a team with gabi butler is gonna attract fans.

Merritt Island is about an hour from Daytona and they have a IOC 5, Melbourne, FL has a strong 5R (some could make a LVL 5 team) and they're within an hour and a half.

I can see this hurting small programs, but I am unsure of whether I see someone leaving (example) TGLC, OO5, BSB, etc. for an unknown.

The $$$ aspect may entice someone who may be on a non-marquee L5 team at a large gym but looking to have a shot at making a Worlds team AND getting attention.

Several points of issue: Defining "scholarshipping". Keep using Cheersport as a reference point- for competition fees for that grand nat'ls alone, for the whole team it's $4000. It's one thing if it's practice unis and maybe gym fees, but EVERYTHING? Also is this just a one-year deal or is it forever? You might get kids in the first year because of it, but if they're just in for the free digs, you're gonna lose a LOT once that's gone. The types of people who leave their gym in Sept for a free cheer year aren't the people to stick around forever.

South Florida was the original location; Daytona Beach is the 2nd. Daytona will be active for this season; SF is supposed to be her International team and then everyone else next season.
