What time does the school let out? In my experience tryouts are always directly after school. 6pm sounds odd to me. If this is after school I don't see the big deal? Since its current 6th and 7th graders only, they should all already be on campus. I also don't see why mom or dad taking her is important. This is all assuming that this time is directly following school. If it's a non school day a ride at that time could be inconvenient. However if a kid wants to tryout and her parents are committed then they'll find a way. If they can't get to tryouts, do you think they'll make it to away games?

On another note I don't think it's uncommon for middle school sports to get bumped for high school. Sounds like bad planning/a miscommunication, but if the high school wants their own gym around here whoever else had it will get bumped out, even if they booked first.

I forgot to mention that 6 = elementary school. Different building.

3:15 dismissal. 15 minute window across town.

I think the issue is the short notice, but our MS sports here do not use my gym so I don't believe the middle schools where I coach have ever been bumped by me.

They are making it work. I think the issue most were having was the "why wait until 9 pm the day before to tell us?" part.

Gotcha. In that situation I feel like there could have been a better solution? Push back a day? Use the aux gym or cafeteria and keep the time the same. My first post I didn't have enough info to see why it was a bigger deal.

If I were in this situation I would think the HS tryouts should go first and if they run long it's not that big of a deal. High schoolers are already on campus, they aren't dependent on rides, etc. Moving HS up would probably be easier on them anyways, what are they doing for those roughly 3 hours between time to leave and come back. Especially if they're underclassman who ride a bus. By the time you get dropped off its time to get a ride back.

Nothing to do with my tryouts, but an update on my GodCP's tryout:

She made Football, Basketball, and Competition.

I have to toot her horn. I am so proud of her, especially for making Competition as it is typically all 8th graders. The talent pool was deep this year. About 12-15 kids for all 3 squads out of about 25-30. She is a tad sad because a few of the girls whom she has cheered rec with since 2nd grade did not make middle school. She has all star evals coming but is most excited about this right now (especially because middle school is the first year she gets to go to camp 3 hours away!)

Her little sister also has a tryout coming for 4th/5th grade rec (their area has a strong rec presence to the point that it is no-cut up to 2nd grade, but requires a tryout starting with the 2nd/3rd grade squad through 6th grade.)

Sidenote: I take no credit for her awesomeness. I helped her clean up her cheer and gave her some feedback on Facetime but that's it!

Wow, um I did not in anyway mean that other kids should sit around and wait on her or go home and come back. But I also am not going to check her out of school 2 times a week for practice. As far as I'm concerned I don't care if she doesn't even start practices until school gets out. But I don't want her penalized for missing practices either.

No where in my post did I say that YOU expected anyone to wait for your cp. All I was saying is that is the reason WE were given as to why freshman are not eligible for Varsity or JV teams

Just realized that CP will most likely not be able to try out for HS cheer. There is 4 days of try out clinics (Mon-Thurs) that they need to be at, followed by try outs on Friday. CP has Summit practice Mon-Thurs. Ugh If they had HS practice/try out clinics after school like so many other schools this wouldn't be an issue, but the coaches day job doesn't allow her to get to the HS until 6pm, therefore nothing ever happens before 6pm. I just don't see any way of this working out. [emoji22] It's doubly frustrating because CP only tries out for fall cheer because she knows how intense her all star schedule gets from November on, and she would never ask either team to try to accommodate her crazy schedule. I'm very sad...

Just left our first day of tryouts this year and HOLY COW there are a ton of changes (almost like someone read this post.. :p)
Here's a list of the changes to our tryouts this year:
  • NO outside judges
  • Tumbling requirements for varsity
  • Numbers will not be posted on the door on Friday but will instead be posed on the cheer website at 9 PM after tryouts
  • Stunting will be part of tryouts
  • Smaller squad sizes
  • No Essays or Interviews
Personally, Im super excited with the way our program is going. I think we will be really competitive this year and will have a team that really wants to succeed !

Woohoo!

We are mid-tryouts...it's awesome...

I'm stressing about what size team to take, how many alternates will be the right number. Balancing that with the knowledge that I know some of these skills are "once-a-years"

Going to start evaluating stunt groups tomorrow. I'm always trying to figure out how best to do that, knowing I've scored everyone on everything on which they are going to get scored, without showing my hand to the rest of the table.
