That's really sad.

And very true. The gym never held any resentment for girls who switched because they were super proud of what they accomplished, and their teammates would cheer them on. Some girls were so grandfathered in that they never moved because of their loyalty and were ecstatic to be brought out. Some left after the buy out because it was too expensive or the methods of the old gym weren't what they were into

Wow, so the fees changed?

I completely agree that there are an abundance of factors that we could try to calculate. And I think there are definitely things we would learn by studying those difference, but I think the base information is clearly biased towards those big gyms, and the alterations that would result from including other contributing factors would be minimal.

I, however, was a broadcast major in college, not a mathematics or stats major, so I'm not really qualified to make those assumptions! :p

There isn't enough information there to confirm much of anything about cause and/or effect. The largest gyms tend to have high win percentages. That doesn't automatically mean that being large causes wins - or even that wins cause you to be large. It could be that other factors cause both. (That is my own personal, albeit biased, opinion.)

Well how many of those fulls and doubles in that CA video learned that skill there? A huge majority I'm sure didn't. They came with them.

Well one of those doubles was my cp and she came to CA with a full. She had been trying to get a double for nearly 2 years and hadnt been able to. Landed her first double after a month at CA. Which, btw she didn't just grow up in another gym and then hop over to CA as soon as she hit level 5, we moved 300 + miles for reasons unrelated to cheer. I'd gather most of those fulls and doubles are there because they have amazing qualified coaches.

Thank you so much for acknowledging "Great Coaching"! Majority of these debates make me want to pull my hair out. I'm always sitting here screaming at my phone or tablet saying things such as:

"Hello? Does anyone remember that these kids are taught generally by us credentialed and certified coaches!??....or do we just pull these skills out of our back pocket and hand them to them like here ya go, there's your standing full!"

Well, before the gym was a true small gym. No NCA, Indy and Cheersport were for L4. Very few out of town comps. The gym that brought/merged with took everyone to the big comps for the most part, expensive unis, and more camps and choreo. So yes it was like a mini version of being at the big gym.

I like the original plan better. It hurts me to see programs like that go.

Truthfully, I have no idea. We need to do a better job of skill tracking and statistics.

I would guess however, that over the last 20 years, we have had more people walk in new to our tryouts with doubles than any other program in the country. However, I would also guess that during that same time period we have trained more doubles from scratch than any other program in the country as well. In fact, I think it is possible we have trained more doubles than any program of any type in the world during that time frame. (I haven't kept up with gymnastics or power tumbling enough over the last few years to say that for certain, however.)

I think I should not have used size in that post. What I meant is not the large gyms, but the top gyms. The stats seem (to me) to show that those Top 10 gyms have a significantly better chance of winning a medal than any other gym (regardless of the other gyms' size). Those Top 10 are not necessarily the top because they are the biggest; they probably have better organization, better coaching, etc.

However, I think a lot of things that make them a "better" gym are easier to acquire when you're a large gym. Larger gyms have more money and therefore can bring in better coaches, better equipment, better office staff, etc. Also, getting medals at Worlds is a nice thing to brag about when trying to bring in new athletes, which in turn brings in more money, which allows you to have better "stuff" and, coincidentally, makes you a larger gym as well as a better gym.

All of this is of course speculation on my part. I do not, and never have, owned a gym. I'm merely a coach for a little start-up Allstar program! That's just my $0.02!
