All-Star How Are Your Lower Level Teams Treated?

This is our fourth gym and the first where I feel like every team is equally as important from youth 1 to senior 5. It's actually quite awesome. Even the coaching staff is spread evenly and worlds coaches who are the toughest in the gym (I'm thinking of Tye Hill) also coaches the youth 1 and some in between. They give equal attention to all of their teams. He's just as "Tye" with the little ones as he is with he big ones and we all love that about him. He's amazing, like the rest of the staff. What a talented crop of coaches.

I will say the worlds team has a more practice right now but they also have vastly different circumstances with their recent division change and essentially being 3 months behind everyone (including our youth 1) in terms of routine proficiency and their first bid comp is in 12 days. No one is jealous that they're basically practicing every single day and have two a days on Sunday until they get up to speed.....I think everyone sorta feels sorry for them actually :D

Old Gym(small): was there about 8 seasons. Our 1st season CP started out on Mini 1 and gym had a Lg Coed L5, at that time it was our 1st season of all-star, gym had lots of coaches at least 8 I can remember. The level 1 coach was hardcore, CP team had great season they were undefeated and did very well at SOH.

Fast Fwd to 2 season later, lots of coaches left gym. Gym decided to field its 1st Small All Girl L5 and the entire gyms focus was all about L5. The experienced coaches, coached that team. lower level teams were given Jr. Coaches (a lot of them were on this Level 5 team) and one of the experienced coaches helped out lower level teams (CP team) This was a disaster as Jr coaches (teens) cannot communicated very well and have NO patience when working with little ones. We stayed as my CP LOVED her coach and didn't want to cheer any where else, even though a lot of her friends left for other gyms.

Current gym ((Large): has several Worlds teams. Levels 1-4 is not treated any different than Level 5. They push everyone to be the best athlete.

I think some coaches/gym owners lose sight that the lower level team kids are your future level 5 and if you don't invest in them. What will be the future of your gym once your current level 5 kids age out?

On the choreo side, I hate when level 2's have simple baby routines with minimal choreo. My old gym sometimes did this to the lower levels, they'd get the simple routine that didn't score as well as the level 3/4 routine with more stunts, more standing tumbling, more performance material. Even better music. Looking back I guess they believed that those performing on a lower level weren't capable of during harder material, but that shouldn't be an excuse. As it has been said, lower levels draw business from parents with athletes starting out. When my mom wanted to switch gyms it wasn't because of their stellar worlds teams, it was their junior and youth teams that were beating us and performing like our higher level teams.

True, but in my limited experience, I think some of the craziest parents have kids on the younger teams, and tend not to care if their kid is yelled at.
I honestly don't have a problem when my kid is yelled at,... if she did something to deserve it. If she is half a**ing, not paying attention, ect, please call her on it. Yelling jut to yell, I don't agree with.

These reality shows makes it seem like that moms hate having their kid yelled at. Even if they're wrong. But there is no telling how much of that stuff is actually edited to make you think what they want you to think.

Given CP's age, I'm not okay with yelling. Correcting, yes...but I think you can do that without actually yelling. But I've heard moms literally say yell to make my kid cry---that to me, is overboard.

ITA. That yelling to make a kid cry is overboard, and that correcting them is the way to go.

Gyms should more pay attention to their lower level athletes, especially from a business standpoint. The parents are usually willing to enroll their kids in classes consistently, and privates as well.
Totally agree with you!! Those younger/lower level teams are the gym's future. You need to instill the love and make them feel just as important as your level 5 teams.

I never go to work with the intentions of making a child cry, but it does happen. Often times it is after I give a simple correction, not because I was yelling (because I'm usually not). And if I do yell, it is at the whole team, or because of a safety issue.

Could it be because many kids are very sensitive? Some kids don't even like the feeling of being yelled at even as a group because it makes them that they're in trouble.

Most of the time they are in trouble. I'm like @omgitssydthekid in that I only raise my voice and yell if I've made a correction multiple times, or if they do something stupid and dangerous. I yelled at my minis in cases like this:
-Give a correction, kid gets it wrong, give the correction again, kid gets it wrong again, ask kid if they know what I told them to do, kid says no. Then I yell at the whole team for not listening.
-Mini runs through a full out routine on the front floor to get to practice on the second floor. Almost gets tumbled on.
-Kids talking during stunting. Dangerous.

Well, sensitive or not if the team deserves to be yelled at, I am probably going to yell at them. If you're messing around and putting other athletes or yourself at risk, you will be reprimanded. Period. If you don't want to get yelled at, pay attention and don't mess around.
