Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure you can as long as it's not released. I usually see it where the back spot holds on to the ankles the whole time.

Yep, you can transition to prone (i.e. backspot holds ankles), but you can't throw a cradle to land in prone.
 
Also: make sure its clear they're holding on. We did two bases (back and main) and flyer in lib, to stomach and the back spot could not let go, and it had to be clear they're holding on (at the summit the safety people in warm ups told us this)
