When we went to nationals I told all my teachers and on my attendence recording it was excused and was written down as "athletics" but it was for a high school team so they school was probabaly more okay with it.

You can be arrested if your child is not attending school, based on truancy laws. It rarely happens, exceptions are made if your child is officially schooled from home (because they are technically at school). I doubt there are truancy laws that apply to a few falsified occurances, it tends to cover excessive absences...wait, parents can actually get arrested for lying about why they didnt send their child to school ? or did I read that wrong ?
