If I were to cherry pick a page from their site, I find this one more offensive:

I would never want my college age daughter to be advertised on a website as "Eye Candy." If that's what you want for your kid, rock on. It cracks me up that there was a huge uproar about a new uniform, generally worn by 18 and up athletes, but many would want their daughter in the DCC one.

To add to what Jule said, and as was discussed for something like 50 pages in the new uniforms thread...

The Top Gun uniform was not vilified for the amount of skin it showed. It was because of the straps all over it making it look s&m-ish. And that was ugly and unflattering. And that it had no back.

I don't expect to see 12 year olds with cleavage and tiny shorts. I see it all the time though, and it's not cute. On a 22 year old woman, it's not as upsetting. And as @BlueCat said, they do so much that is beyond the outfits and the game performances. Every professional cheerleader I've ever known (not many, but a handful) or even known of, has been the kind of woman that us successful in everything they do. NFL cheerleader is just another thing to add.

It's not like these are just dumb women who couldn't do anything else except put on a sexy outfit. I think the DCC has just as many inaccurate stereotypes attached to it as allstar cheer. That's why I never understand why allstar cheerleaders are always ragging on NFL /NBA cheerleaders - Why do to another group what you hate having done to you?

My only problem with the DCC is that the team is chosen not just by skill, but also appearance. I remember watching the DCC show and there was one girl who was a really good dancer, an impressive resumé, but she didn't have "the right look." She was in really good shape, and by no means ugly, but since she wasn't pretty enough for them, I think she ultimately got cut and that just doesn't sit well with me. And in a way that does reflect on cheerleading and cheerleaders because whether we like it or not, when some people hear "cheerleading" they think of the DCC or the pretty popular girls. I'd rather people not associate non-pro cheer teams with pro teams because no one on a college/all star/high school team is going to cut a girl because she doesn't look flawless in the uniform or her nose is too big.
And just to be clear, I am NOT hating on the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders themselves. They are amazing and what they do is super difficult. It takes a lot of hard work and skill to be on the team, I just don't completely agree with the people running the program. I also don't have a problem with them at all-star comps. Some of the women on the team do have cheer backgrounds, although it's not showcased too often, but you definitely need a strong dance background to make the team.
I just wish non-cheer people would realize that pro cheer and all star/college/high school cheer are very different entities. Once again, not hating on anyone, not saying one is better/harder than the other, they're just different.

Sure, they have a tv show so people actually see the behind the scenes look at how the girls are chosen, but it's everywhere. And I hate to be the one to break it to people, but yes, people on college/allstar/high school teams most certainly are being chosen by appearance! Probably less in allstar, but that's because everyone that walks through the door is paying money. No one would ever admit it, but I assure you, it's happening on college and high school teams more often than anyone would like to think. It happens everywhere - even in jobs that have nothing to do with appearance. I don't like it anymore than anyone else, but it is what it is. The DCC is definitely not alone in choosing people by appearance. And it's not even necessarily by who is prettiest - it's by who looks best with the rest of the group - and who fits what the audience is paying to see.

Completely back this up. I try my best to never partake and can proudly say I've never counted appearance against anyone personally. However parents and kids have no idea the stuff I have seen and heard on the other side. Coaches, gym owners, especially choreographers, etc. Who makes the team, which team, what spot they're in, everything. The college I went to would even got calls from random "fans" about certain cheerleaders being too ugly, too pale, too overweight, too whatever on a normal basis. Its completely absurd but happens A LOT!

I'm a librarian. While interviewing at a library while touring the library with the manager, the older men using the
Library kept looking at me and making borderline inappropriate faces and the manager noticed and she flat out said to me "Oh no. Look how they're reacting to you....I don't...."

Sure enough I got a call a week later saying how great I was and how much they liked me blah blah but they didn't think I'd be a "good fit"


I also know for a fact that part of the reason I have my current job is because I'm young and looked young and didn't "look like" every other person working there. They even said to me "ohhhh we thought you were younger " when they found out my age my first day

It happens. Even it something and boring as working in a library.

Absolutely true! And like @AScheer said, in college, our ATHLETIC DIRECTOR basically told our coach that some of the girls that were on the team were not the right "look" and sure enough next year at tryouts, "appearance" was a category we were judged on. It's a harsh world out there.

I certainly wasn't expecting my announcement about this event to turn into such an in-depth, and frankly very enlightening, conversation. It's great that you all have such serious and deep beliefs about cheerleading and all are so involved in the world around you, that's why I love this board. A year ago I would have laughed at anyone who told me I would be checking a cheerleading forum daily, but here we are.

On another note, to hint at the ridiculousness that sometimes occurs in the uniform business, Varsity sent a cease and desist letter through their lawyers to us for using the name of the competition in my post. Seems a little over the top to me. Hope a few of you that read about this event can make it, I know it will a be a crazy busy weekend for a lot of you, so either way good luck in Dallas!

Absolutely true! And like @AScheer said, in college, our ATHLETIC DIRECTOR basically told our coach that some of the girls that were on the team were not the right "look" and sure enough next year at tryouts, "appearance" was a category we were judged on. It's a harsh world out there.

When I was in high school we even were scored on appearance. You had to wear a bow, have no nail polish, game day ready makeup, hair up, etc. It was no DCC tryout for sure, but it definitely was a factor even in high school!
