Actually, I stayed at the Hyatt, but per others from our gym, it is definitely reasonable walking distance. The ice storm in Dallas last year invaded our room at the Hyatt. I have pictures of all of the ice on the INSIDE OF THE WINDOW.:confused:

That storm was epic! I had the same problem. And the heat into my room wasn't working. I actually slept in my Patagonia jacket!

Totally ridiculous that the heat wasn't working in some of the hotels...ESPECIALLY with the prices that we pay. We were just trying to get back to VA before the storm got over here. We were out of school for another 2 days when we got home LOL.

If I recall from years past...the rooms open up closer to the end of the year (whenever the deadline is for the gym blocks)

Devil's Advocate....What happens if Coca Cola, Beyoncé, National Quilting Bee, Humane Society, etc. plan something the same weekend and block those hotels. Are we, as attendees, still happy if we have to drive 20+ miles to the venue in icy weather? And again, I'm just basing this off what two managers told me when I was inquiring about the high pricing in Nashville. These managers had no problem telling me about spray tans in showers ruining shower curtains, towels, and staining grout and how long it takes them to get glitter out of carpet. I'd love to blame everything on Housing and Stay To Play, but both of these managers made it pretty clear in their nicest way possible, we aren't the hotel industry's favorite consumers.

It depends on what you consider walking distance! The Omni, if you can get in, is the closest. There are several hotels within a mile - walking distance on a nice day but not so much in an ice storm! They do have a train system that goes to the Convention Center but I have never used it so I can't offer advice on that. Most of the hotels within walking distance are probably already booked, so you are better off looking for a hotel that offers a free shuttle to and from (and if you compete before 7am or after 10pm the shuttle probably won't be available!)

From the managers I talked to, it's the extra work and damage, the glitter and spray tans just stood out. Many parents giving free rein to their kids and silly stuff like pressing every button on the elevator board slowing down their staff. Many parents leaving their sleeping kids to go to the lobby bar, getting complaints from surrounding rooms on what sounds to be terrified screaming/crying children somewhere. Many parents leaving their older kids to watch the younger kids while they go to the lobby bar not realizing the older kids plan their own little parties, and laugh, talk, and empty the mini bar (only to have parents deny this would ever happen and dispute the charges and complaints received). They said anytime you get a large population of adults with kids that know each other, there are many adults that use poor judgment so they can socialize, and trust that their normally well behaved child will act accordingly with other unsupervised kids.

I will, also, share what I learned from a parent in the hotel industry. She said because of the high tax revenue hotels, malls, and amusement parks generate, you rarely hear of the crime that goes on in these places. She said these places employ a large percentage of non and broken English speaking employees that can't assist young children when they ask for help. I will just leave it at, parents, we all need to stop being so trusting. She said these criminals know these are the places we allow our kids to roam freely and our kids will break off from their group to use the restroom, get a snack, etc. and these criminals count on it.

I won't even let my daughter walk a hotel hallway without a friend or me watching all the way to the elevator. How easy is it for some sicko to grab a kid walking down the hall and pull them into their room?
Something parents may not think about but we should.

Wow. The employee thing scares me. What if a kid tries to explain to them that somebody has been kidnapped, or that someone is having an allergic reaction to something?

And how could so many parents and kids be THAT irresponsible? Do they have any impression what image they are feeding to outsiders about our sport? Do they even teach their kids why they're not supposed to press certain elevator buttons?

Yes, there are still King rooms available. I know you aren't being contrary, it makes perfect sense that a hotel that caters to the business world vs. families would have very few double rooms. However, with that said, many of our families have two or more kids in the program so a King room is not a realistic option for them. We, also, have several single parents that have non-cp's that need to travel with them.

Stay To Play isn't the issue, as much as, it appears gyms are trying to keep their programs in one hotel. We have several families that would prefer to pay $400 a night for a king room next to the convention center and we have other families that need double rooms under a price point of $150. Open reservation for all hotels within the Stay To Play contract would alleviate that issue and still fill hotels to capacity.

I called NCA about my CP being on a room block for a different gym with a different family and they said that is totally fine as long as her name is on a room through NCA housing, it doesn't matter what room block or with what gym. (I actually got a room at the Hyatt not through NCA and told NCA that) As long as CPs name is on somebody's NCA housing reservation, we're fine. For me the problem was that all NCA housing rooms available were so far. It is important for us to be close. If there are rooms available close by, I didn't see why I should have to stay over 10 miles away. We offset the higher room cost by not needing a car and not having to pay for parking. Walking around downtown is a lit of fun!! We stayed at Magnolia last year using the exception form. Last year they allowed exemptions if you had made a reservation without being aware of their policy. They are being much more strict this year.

Be careful, I don't understand it, but they canceled my friends reservation. I don't even understand how they knew she was a cheer Mom. She has a common first & last name.
