Was thinking same thing. I put on average about 15-20,000 miles a year on my car. And that's with having my office in my house for the past 8 years so I am not even communting for work.

My cars..
A 2006 Chevy cobalt . I got in 2005 for my first car in high school.
It's a cheap car, and got pretty decent MPG..but every body at school thought I had like the nicest car and couldn't understand why my parents bought me a car and I didn't have to do anything for it or pay for it. I was not a fan of this car but I did like that I didn't have to pay for it. Well a year later I made my dad so angry he took it away for a little while till I learned my lesson. I proceeded to tell him I hated him and he was the worst dad in the world. So he sold it. Oops.. I was young and dumb! In that year that I had it, I had no issues what so ever it was a perfect car as far as I didn't have to have any work done on it!
My mom bought me a 96 Honda accord (because she felt bad my dad took the car back -my parents are divorced) fully loaded v6. I loved that car.. With the sun roof and leather! I also liked that it had some Go power!! She paid cash for it as it was used but it also was a perfect car. I put tons of miles on
It and even though it was older the year I kept it , I did not have a single issue!
My dad was finally talking to me again a year later and didn't want me to have a car that's 10 years old. He had an 06 civic (2 doors) it's the sports one and my dad even put rims on it!!!! He told me I could have it if I agreed to give my brother my car but my dad wanted me to be nice to my brother since my dad always got me cars. My dad had some money so although the civic wasn't but 2 years old he had paid it off for me. I absolutely loved that car .. Best gas mileage, it was kind of fast, it was pretty and I kept it for several years. I absolutely was in love with that car...
Well I was on my phone on the interstate in pouring down rain and I hydroplaned! I went across all lanes of traffic to the median between the east and west bound lanes. Which actually was a big ditch, and I totaled my car.
I was devastated to lose the best car ever!!!!
My dad then got mad at me and he said he would not turn it into insurance because he had actually never took the policy out of his name or put me on it. I just put the car in my name but the insurance never ended up getting transferred because my dad knew I wouldn't pay for it. So he told me he won't turn the car in because he has no tickets, and no wrecks that his insurance was going to go up for a long time just so I could get a check. I understand this now but I really thought he was just being down right mean back then.
My dad then took cash down to a car lot and paid 7 grand for a 03 Mitsubishi Galant ES. Talk about the biggest piece of junk you could imagine. Everything in the world was wrong with that car plus more. I was miserable! The gas mileage wasn't all that great either! I drove it for over a year and I probably put more money into that POS then I could of bought a new car for!!
I wanted a new car so I financed a 08 Toyota Camry SE! It has the sports trim all around it and tinted windows. All black interior and this car is every bit of perfect! I could drive this car forever. Nothing other then maintenance and my car is well taken care of it has not given me an issue. The difference is I pay $301 a month for this car. Not my dad or my mom but me and its a struggle. I really do love my car but if I could go back to that one rainy day on the interstate I would take my paid for Civic back. Although its like a sports car and super small it got the best gas mileage and had so many upgrades and it was paid for. That is one of my many mistakes...
So long story short:
06 Cobalt - cheap but reliable, it wasn't real fancy on the inside either
96 Honda Accord v6 - it had some power, a bunch of nice upgrades, decent MPG, and a good quality car especially with it being older and it didn't require any work
06 Honda Civic - best gas mileage, super cute, sporty, functional, and didn't need anything at all, it would of ran forever
03 Mitsubishi Galant ES - WORST CAR, everything needs fixed, it still just wanted to fall apart, it is boring to look at, and with so much work you mise well just purchase a new car
08 Toyota Camry SE - also a perfect car but costs quite a bit of money. It's roomy on the inside compared to all others, and has a very distinguished look about it, the gas mileage is ok but it is a bigger car so it's kind of what you expect, also not a single issue out of this car and I can see myself keeping this for a while.
There is my personal thoughts on cars...

I drive an 03 Ford Focus. I love everything about it. Except I just found out two days ago that the 3rd gear clutch is going in it which is about an $800 fix :( Apparently they are notorious for that. So anyone on here who drives a focus be aware that it may happen to you!! Other than that, it is good. Doesn't have much power though :P

I drive a 1998 Honda Accord that used to belong to my grandfather. It has around 125k miles on it and is still running great! I got lucky that he was getting a new car a few years ago, around the same time I got my license, and the car was given to me!
We also have a 2002 Honda Accord that we purchased last year and it runs good but I'm not sure of its mileage.
AND we have a 2000 Honda Odyssey minivan that we bought new back then. It has 279k miles on it and is still being used, though I think it's time is coming...

I drive a 2008 Element! I love it, sooo much room on the inside and it has a vtec. Only four seats though, I actually fit 11 people in it to go to a party.. My mom bought it brand new and have it to me this year, she still makes payments on it. Only problem we had with it was when the battery died (one time) the deck/radio thing resets and we couldn't get it back on. Before that I had a 98 corolla, looked terrible because it was so old but made like I tank, I took it mudding.. It has about 280000 kms on it. Sits in my yard just incase I need it.
I'd say anything honda is a great choice

My grandma bought it new in 1991, but she only drove about 3 miles each way to work (and it was usually only a couple days a week, if that). Other than that, my grandparents mainly drove a Buick, the Toyota was just her car for going the few miles to work. But she got really sick in the late '90s and the car just sat in their carport for years. My grandma passed away in 2007 and my grandpa in 2008 and after that, nobody wanted the car, so my uncle let me have it. I had to get the repair work done on it from sitting for so long (fluids cleaned out, new tires, wipers, all that) and now it runs like a champ.

I've had two cars in my 7 years of driving.
I got a new Hyundai Accent when I turned 16. Loved it-- it wasn't very expensive, got great gas mileage and had a hatchback and collapsable back seats so I could shove all my college stuff in. I never had any problems with it and my grandma hasn't either since she bought it from me.
My junior year of college I got a 2007 VW Jetta--
Perks:
Great gas mileage
Good acceleration
Roomy back seat
Leather, sunroof, alloy wheels, heated seats
Big trunk
It's just all around beautiful
Downside:
It's expensive as heck to repair. I rear-ended someone and had $4,000 in damage.
The O2 sensor is shot and is a couple hundred $$ to replace
My major maintenance (you get one every few years) was over $1,000.
It accelerates really quickly and I speed really easily because I don't realize it.

I drive a 22 years old car and i love it.
I put so much money in it, i could have bought a new one with all the money years ago (not a brand new, just another one).
It's a 190 mercedes with 390.000 km since yesterday :-)
I hope we will make the 500.000 km together, but i'm not sure if i can afford the car services that will be needed to reach this goal.
My first car was a Fiat Uno, it is really small and we even moved with it. Had to drive a hundret times.
But i really enjoyed our rental car in america, so much space, automatic, and no problems with it. We had a chevrolet, was a great car.

I had two focuses and both transmissions went out. My step sister has an '03 and it's caused her some problems, but it also has 230,000 miles on it.
I have a '03 taurus now and my dad has put more money into repairs than we paid for it... Two new batteries, water pump, ball joints, 5 new tires (have you ever had 2 flat tires in one day? It is not fun. Especially when you've used all of your AAA's for the year), the door panel fabric is coming off on the inside, my air conditioning knob broke off, when it rains my windshield leaks and the passenger side of my floorboard floods (apparently that's a ford problem?), and I get terrible gas mileage.
I really don't recommend fords from my experiences....
My mom drove a Kia Sedona for about 4 years and it had almost 200,000 miles on it when she traded it in. We never had any major problems with it and it drove really smooth.
She drives a 2010 Mercedes m-class right now and my only complaint is she refuses to let me drive it. It's so perfect! Except sometimes the radio randomly turns off and resets itself, but after leaving it at the dealership for 2 weeks and they couldn't find a problem we just decided that was okay.
My dad drives a PT cruiser and he loves it. He gets pretty good gas mileage and he has almost 300,000 miles on it!

I have a 2001 GMC Jimmy that I absolutely adore. It's perfect, even though I get crappy gas mileage I love it. Karla is my baby. When I first got her right after I got my license, I hated her and thought she was stupid and embarrassing but now I'm so glad that she was my first car. But I'm getting a 2011 Chevy Equinox soon and I actually kinda sad about it lolol.
But my dad drives a Lexus IS and he loves it, not a single major problem with it and Lexus has amazing service. My stepmom drives a 2013 Lexus RX and it's absolutely amazing. And beautiful.
My mom has a 2011 Chevy Malibu and she hates it, and I hate driving it. It's awkwardly shaped and I find it hard to park.
My grandma has a 2009 Pontiac G6 and it's probably my most favorite car in the world to drive. It's so easy to park and it's the perfect size for a car, and I hate driving cars.

never had a brand new car but heres the pros and cons of any car I've driven in my short time driving....
2001 ford focus hatchback-
pros: good first car, decent gas mil., stick shift was forgiving and easy to learn for me as a new driver, decent trunk size, back seat had good room for a hatchback, good in the snow, any parts needed were easy to come by.
cons: radio and had a personality of it's own, changed stations on its own lol. pesky check engine light that never wanted to turn off even though there was no issue. clutch started going out but it did have 120,000 on it. it met it's maker one fateful afternoon in a parking lot getting plowed into by a wayward big truck, luckily I was not in it!
1999 camry-
pros: 200,000 miles and still going! durable, made to last, everything feels like it will never wear. The dashboard still looks new, and the engine is still on all it's original parts. great on gas for a v6. good power. good in snow.
cons: headlights fogging over, has had many random dead batteries and jump starts. minor sticking of door hinge. idles rough sometimes. still going strong though. My sister drives this as her "beater." I drive it from time to time. It will outlive us all.
2005 camry-
pros: same durability as the 99 camry, has withstood a hurricane, water and tree branch damage. Leather, v6, good maint. cost, parts are cheap. all the ususal camry good stuff. safe feeling car and solid ride.
cons: hard time trying to start it up during the cold weather or ultra freezing mornings, but runs fine after trying a few times. my dad said it has a teeny tiny minor coolant leak which might affect that. keyfob to unlock needed to replace twice but under warranty.
I vote Toyota for a durable car, I would buy a brand new one if I can later in life.

This happened to my car too! My grandfather offered us his 06 Honda Civic, and my brother got first pick because he's older. He didn't want it, so then my mom wanted to know if I wanted it. I took it because I knew it was a great car and an AMAZING deal (they sold it to us for way cheaper than they probably should have because they were selling to their grandchildren). Flash forward a few months to March. It's my brother's 16th birthday. Him and my mom can't agree on a car because he keeps trying to push her safety boundaries and she won't budge. So he doesn't have a car and he has to use mine. He gets in the car and is all excited he gets to drive to his pool league and the radio won't play. He starts throwing a fit and finally my mom just tells him to drive her car. All so he can just listen to music. Anyway, another month later (by this point he had his own car but he still drives mine because his gets awful gas mileage), and I'm at at a softball game. (Varsity is playing so I have my phone) my brother texts me "hey" nothing else just "hey" (as a reference point: we have a relationship where we only tolerate each other most of the time.) So obviously this isn't normal. We go back and forth for a few minutes and i finally have to ask him "why did you text me in the first place?" He replies "I crashed" and that's how I found out my brother totaled my car before I even got a chance to drive it. And believe me, I was livid. Because 1) I had to pull each and every little piece of information out of him with a wrench to get anything 2) I never got a chance to drive it myself 3) he was never as careful with my car as he was with his so 4) I never liked him driving my car anyway. So now I'm looking for a car. Any suggestions? I haven't really looked at anything specific. Thought I'd bring this thread back up because I really need help
