@Just-a-Mom I'm watching a documentary called Jig about Irish dance and I can't believe how much crazier than cheer families these people are!! One of the boys they focus on moved with his family from California to England and his dad gave up his medical practice, just so he could dance with a prestigious coach/choreographer. There seems to be a lot of similarities with the sacrifices and the way it kind of takes over their lives, but relocating an entire family and giving up a multimillion dollar job is just nuts to me.

We own the dvd of that documentary. :) I'd say the craziness is about the same. I've not known anyone to move for it (I've known more people to move for cheer actually!) But it definitely is very similar the way you just get sucked in and before you know it, it's taken over and your whole life is planned around dance. My next 6 months is going to be spent traveling, trying to get her to competitions all over the US. But we love it just like we loved cheer. :)

Your Irish @Just-a-Mom ?

You live in Ireland, correct?
My mother-in-law is from Dublin, and we all have Irish citizenship thanks to her :D.
Haven't been there in almost 11 years though and we are itching to get back.
Yes I live in Cork about 3-4 hours from Dublin. You should try and get back soon its probably a completely different place since you've last been.

In a good way or bad way? I hope only good.
We usually stay up on the west coast, in Connemara near Clifden. Fly into Shannon and head north. Dublin makes me crazy because we always get lost there driving, no matter what, but it is a fun city. We will typically make a roadtrip to there when we come though as his grandparents are buried there so we like to pay respects, plus there are a couple of family friends we try to see, but we prefer the west coast. We have been to Cork though, our first trip there years ago sans kids we just drove around the country for two weeks and stayed in B&Bs. Our next trip I absolutely want to head up north and finally see Giant's Causeway.

Defiantly in a good way lol. Its come along way. I usually only make the trip up there for shopping or concerts since its the capital it has a good buzz. In the past few years they've spent millions on new roads, motorways, bypasses, tunnels so what used to be a 5 hour drive from cork to Dublin is now only 2 and a half hours which is fairly sweet, so next time you might find it a lot easier driving around. That would be a lovely trip if you make it there you should try and make it to Donegal(my grandparents live there) has some of the most amazing beaches in Ireland great for any surfers if you get the right day.

samesies :chestbump: What part are you from?

Oh. :( Not directly from Ireland. Just heritage. My grandparents on both sides are directly from there, so we have lots of traditional Irish "ways" (and no... I don't mean drinking and cursing a lot. Lol In case there are any smarties that were going to guess that).

Truthfully I'm not even sure specifically where. I've only just become aware  that our heritage is actually important and now I'm trying to figure it all out without my family around (the grandparents and my mother have all passed away years ago). My sister and I have been going through photo albums and papers for a couple years, and trying to put it together. When I was younger I always thought "Blah blah blah. I get it. We're Irish. Yay. Can I go out now?" and now I'm struggling to share it with my children.

I'm hoping to take my kids there soon. We went when I was little (like 8?) but I've never been as an adult. I really wish I'd appreciated my grandparents' stories when they were here to tell them.

The one thing I DO like about Chicago is that it's a great place to live if you are of Irish descent. My younger daughter has really embraced it. Her Irish dance school teaches them to read/speak gaelic (limited, but it's something) in addition to dance, and she's learned more about the counties than I even know. I love that they teach more than just dance, but also where it comes from.

I really want to say Cork is the one. But of course that could just be my lousy detective skills - again, I never listened when I was younger and am now piecing together based on photos and letters (fascinating stuff actually. I get lost for hours reading all this stuff). Maybe we'll be there one day to visit!

Sorry for so many posts - I'm on my phone.

My daughter's middle name is siobhan! :) I wanted it to be her first name, but no one can ever pronounce it (as I'm sure you know) and I wanted to make life easier for her. I really wanted to go with Saoirse but her dad put the brakes on that real quick.

My friend's parents are from Ireland. Their kids names are Orlagh, Sinead, Aiden, and Deirdre. No Siobhan though.
