I'm so excited for Immigrants. Mostly because I love to shout, "IMMIGRANTS, We get the job done!" and I have a feeling this new song is based on that. Fitting.

Any who, thanks to everyone keeping the political discussion as civil as you can muster. Contrary to popular belief, I really enjoy hearing other people's views and as much as I love living in my liberal-leaning, Northeastern US bubble, I love that the boards allows me to hear from people all over the country (and international people) on a more personal level about their beliefs.

Also shoutout to @ErinS especially. I am only a white woman, and while I like to think I am open minded, empathetic, and supportive to all my fellow people, you always open my eyes to things I may overlook or things I don't quite *get.* Thanks for keeping it real, always.

I think you get it but don't get it too. This election DIDNT suddenly change the state of race relations in this country this storm has been building for 8 years and has been stoked by politicians and the media, and that isn't ok. It can't all be laid at Trumps feet. I understand you don't like that idea but it is what it is.

You're right, it didn't do this. What it did, however, was set a standard for what is now considered acceptable. That is the key difference. And that can, and will always, be laid at Trump's feet.

I think whether it had that kind of effect remains to be seen, I don't think that kind of paradigm shift happens at the blink of an eye, and I think a lot of the supposed "racism" of Trump is blown out of proportion by the media.

It has been building for more than eight years, but I am sure that you aren't meaning it like that.

Nobody said the state of race relations suddenly changed in the election. The hate has been there. We're unfortunately aware. People are becoming bolder but under the guise of this election and we're exposed to more of it becomes of technology. Racism, bigotry and hatred in this country has existed since this country began its existence. The state of race relations in the country has been trash since the first boatload of Europeans rolled up on the Native Americans to be quite frank.

But yeah, race relations suddenly started building when the Obama Administration started according to you. How telling.

But again the story with your daughter matters but everyone else's experience doesn't. Okay.

Multiple white nationalists have said that his candidacy made them feel like their views are now legitimate in the mainstream.

Do I think all of his supporters are racist? No. Do I think it's scary that white supremacists, who usually eschew mainstream politics, got behind him? Yes.

Once again. You are choosing to misrepresent what I am saying. I NEVER said anyone's experience didn't matter, and it's insulting that you are saying so. That is twisting what I said to suit your view. All I have said is this election isn't the crazy crisis people are making it out to be, and that racism isn't one sided. Not that anyone's experience is somehow less significant, but NONE of us have experienced anything at the hands of Trump as yet. A lot of people are assuming things that haven't happened. Some people on both sides are definitely blowing it out of proportion. All I am saying is wait and see why actually happens before declaring the end of the world.

Race relations in this country have deteriorated rapidly over the last 8 years, no doubt and yes, the current administration has stoked that fire purposefully IMO.

So because people who he has no ties to choose to vote for him, he's at fault and should somehow be able to control them. He has said multiple times he has no interest in their support.

I'm missing where I said he was at fault. I was pointing out that his campaign, whether intentionally or not, made these people feel like their views are okay to express and possibly act upon.

Even though I don't think he is, white nationalists think they have a sympathizer in the white house. I saw someone post today that they can now get away with assaulting women, because Trump's election has proven that women are subservient. Do I think that's true? Not anymore than it has been for years, since most people who assault someone do get away with it. But it's the perception that people have of being able to get away with something, or their once fringe views now being acceptable that scares me.

If hate crimes do happen under Trump, I hope that he'll come down hard. Then no one will think that it's okay, or they can get away with it. On either side.

The moral to this discussion is at the end of the day, kind people are going to have to work harder. The compassionate people are going to have to work harder. The good people are going to work harder.

My experience is mine and mine alone. I can't control anyone else's actions but my own, but I can speak up when I see wrong and I can pledge to not do wrong to others. I don't care if you're black. I don't care if you're Muslim. I don't care I you're white. I don't care if you're LGBTQ etc. At the end of the day Erin is going to treat everyone equally. Erin isn't going to suppress anyone's feelings, stories or experience.

But Erin can't speak for anyone else.

And to be clear doing this does not require any particular political affiliation nor is it limited to any political affiliation

That's all

I'd be shocked TBH. I'd be shocked at this point if they come down hard on a hate crime under anyone's administration.

Literally I'm in the process of mentally preparing myself for them to decide that Dylann Roof is not competent to stand trial on the federal hate crime charges for the Charleston Church shooting

I literally came home last month to an FBI agent for his defense at my house wanting me to speak on his character because I came in contact with him once but I worked with a victim for two years.

That's bold. It's amazingly bold.

If I read these accounts via the media, I'd agree. However the bulk of these accounts are being shared by the people experiencing them; not a major station looking to cash in.
