Someone at AT&T told my friend that they have recently (within the past year) done something with their service that will default to LTE, even if you're on wifi, if the LTE connection is stronger and/or faster. It still shows on your phone that you're on wifi.
I think I turned that off (there's something in settings about "use data if stronger" or something, that you can unchecked so if the WiFi is weak you just get nothing).

I literally have turned data off on my daughter's phone (through AT&T's website) and it still says she's using it. It's so annoying!

2 of my iPhone's are unlimited but both that are unlimited use well over 10 GB's a month on AT&T so we are never getting off unlimited.

The other 3 phones on my acct never go over 3 GB's on the iPhone's and there all on 3GB plans so I don't have overages.

I did have overage one month so I swapped the unlimited between two phones since the other one with unlimited didn't really ever use it

I never go over, but like I said, we have 15gb for two people. But I have wondered if they're playing with usage too. I'm going to try and track my data usage on a month by month basis on my iphone. See what it says there.

It's really easy to convince somehow who doesn't know any better to drop their unlimited data. Back when my husband was on his mom's family plan this happened to them. "Oh you guys only use a combined 4gb of data. It's cheaper to get shared data and get the 6gb! No one needs unlimited data and you'll save money." So she went ahead and changed it without talking to him.

I think part of my increase in usage is iOS8. But I've followed a lot of the recommendations for turning off some of the OS's data hogging settings. And my husband has an Android. So how has his usage drastically increased since last September or so?
What are the data hogging settings?

I don't remember off the top of my head. You can do a search for ios8 using a lot of data and find some. The big one is turning off background app refresh for a lot of apps - Settings > General > Background App Refresh

Thats what I thought it was. I've had mine turned off for all apps since the day I got it. But I'm sure my sister doesn't which is why she uses so much data.

I am on a family plan though AT&T, but I had unlimited data until April. My mom called to see what should could do to reduce the bill and now I have to share data. We keep going over. I'm low key convinced that somewhere AT&T is lying and lied to my mom to get her to drop unlimited. I work at a library (free wifi) and of course I have wifi at home. My phone is on wifi more than its not. Yet, since I got rid of unlimited, the amount they initially said I used for data has nearly doubled and we constantly are going over.

Yet I'm connect to wifi more than ever now.

But okay AT&T. Sure.

My mom too was convinced (tricked) to let go of our unlimited plan when she called AT&T about a question on our bill one day. They told her that my family of 6 never went over 20GB of data/month (hah, right), and that it would be cheaper to get on a regular family plan. She didn't realize how impossible unlimited data was to get nowadays and that now we can't get it back. Ironically the first two weeks into our family plan we all got texts about our data being at like 90%. My heart was broken. To this day I'm still a little bummed about it.

Out of curiosity I just went to see how much data I use ... I'm currently at 14.8 GB with 4 days left in my billing cycle and my BF is at 1.4. I have an iPhone 6 & he has a galaxy 6. I'm also way more obsessed with my phone/use it more anyways. Interesting to see...

Yep same thing happening here. First month I went on a trip and used my gps via data a lot so I justified it getting the 75% text a week before the billing cycle ended. However the next month we got the 75% after a week and a half. 3 people sharing 20 gb and primarily using wifi. Yeah. Sure. Right.

My mom knew better. We've discussed it numerous times. But she retired so she's cutting costs. I even offered to pay but she refused.

Goodness gracious 15gb of data a month!?! My family (5 phones) shares 10gb and we've only gone over once. And I don't have wifi at work.

I don't know, we've never had any of these problems with Verizon. Y'all put up with too much.

Me and my mom are the only ones on a Verizon plan and I believe we have 20gb a month and we ALWAYS either go over or run out of data by the 3rd week. We both are primarily on wifi at home and work.

We have Verizon and 4 of us share 15 GB and never go over. If we use 75% I warn my kids (who use the most) that they will pay the fee if it goes over!

Damn, I have 15g with 5 phones and have only gone over a couple of times last year (NCA & Worlds) and I have no wifi at work and my kids don't always have wifi.
