Not to mention their local help is different for every single event. For people like Varsity or Jamfest that can be hundreds or event thousands of background checks for the whole year. Can you imagine how much comp fees would go up to cover the cost of all those background checks?
Varsity employees are background checked regularly already

She didn't mean regular Varsity employees. EPs don't only use their staff at events. I know that at one of the Varsity events I've attended, they recruit some local college students/cheerleaders to come work at the event. I did it in college at a Jamfest event. It's not feasible to background check people you're hiring just for a weekend.

Then Varsity should make sure that those are the only employees working the warm up rooms if USASF sanctioned events are requiring gyms to do so. Otherwise sorry no point for this requirement by USASF.

What does this mean for rec or school teams that aren't registered with USASF? I'm not a USASF registered coach because we are a school team, but we go to warm ups at the same location as everyone else. I wonder if I will have to bring something from my school saying I passed the background check they required, or will they just require that everyone pay the coach registration fee regardless of if you coach a "all star" team or not. .

I can't speak for ALL of varsity, but I do know from my experience working competitions with NCA, it IS NCA Staff who are running warmups, registration, line judging, pretty much everything but judging. We as Varsity employees are all background checked and approved.

The company is very strict about who represents the brand, so know that anyone wearing NCA is background checked.

That is usually how it is done. When needed (it is rare) when random college teams are asked to come help work, they are usually helping with crowd control out front or are moving equipment/merchandise/awards in the back. Like @yooolizzi said, we are very strict about this since this is a children's activity

NCA/UCA have a lot more staff from camps than most of the other varsity brands. Most other varsity brands don't have all of those staffers to pull from.

It also keeps random strangers from snatching kids when they're away from their parents and might be more easily led off.

Didn't we have a situation last year where some cheerlebrity kid got accosted in warmups or just outside of warmups or something? Or two years ago? Not sure- but this could help that too. A step in the right direction, but I was really hoping for actual warm up regulations..
Expound... I've never heard this story.

Let's take some of the money that we spend on crazy lights and put it toward that.

But nobody wants to give up pretty lights.

GASP! You take away my pretty lights, keep costs the same, and spend that money towards background checks??? But how will I ever compete without my pretty lights?!?! How do I justify spending that much money for a quality competition, even though I know my kids will be safe backstage, if I don't have my lights?

We do background checks and I suppose they are slightly better than doing nothing. However, I think far too much emphasis is being put on that as some kind of cure-all. Just because someone passes a background check does NOT mean they aren't potentially dangerous.

We should be doing everything reasonable to keep our young athletes safe, period. For what it is worth, however, American children are statistically DRAMATICALLY more safe now than in any time in our history.

^^^that. Background checks can only identify people who have been CAUGHT and I assume convicted. Safe practices make more sense.

Eta: statistically a child is much more likely to be hurt by someone they know and trust.

Sorry for the double post, but it reminds me of the new bag-search thing at movie theaters. Unlikely to stop anything other than snack smugglers. Shooters will find a way in, if they want in. But it makes some people feel safer to have searches. And it allows companies to say that they are doing something to keep customers safe. *shrug*

There was a scene at one of the major comps..a cheerlebrity (boy?) was coming either out of warmups or just after competing and a MASSIVE swarm of people surrounded him/her asking for pictures and all sorts of stuff. It got so bad they ended up having to move them to the coaches room so they could be in peace..something along those lines. The specifics are fuzzy. But it reminded me of the time I served at an outdoor restaurant and saw a tidal wave of 100 kids running down the street. I stopped one who was catching their breath- turns out they SWORE it was Justin Bieber in a car.
