There was a scene at one of the major comps..a cheerlebrity (boy?) was coming either out of warmups or just after competing and a MASSIVE swarm of people surrounded him/her asking for pictures and all sorts of stuff. It got so bad they ended up having to move them to the coaches room so they could be in peace..something along those lines. The specifics are fuzzy. But it reminded me of the time I served at an outdoor restaurant and saw a tidal wave of 100 kids running down the street. I stopped one who was catching their breath- turns out they SWORE it was Justin Bieber in a car.

And a problem like THIS, for the most part, could be controlled by parents. If you don't want to risk your child being constantly accosted by strangers, stop trying so hard for fame. At least JB has big money in exchange for his fame. :( Fame comes with great sacrifice personally. (Not saying famous people deserve this, but it seems unavoidable)

Different issue, though. No background check is going to stop crazy teenybopper fandom behavior :D
and yeah, what @amy1k said

Again, Varsity does background checks on their employees.

And again, not everyone that works at an event or in the warmup room is a Varsity employee. Maybe at NCA/UCA events where they have plenty of staffers to choose from, but not all EPs have that employee pool to pull from.

GASP! You take away my pretty lights, keep costs the same, and spend that money towards background checks??? But how will I ever compete without my pretty lights?!?! How do I justify spending that much money for a quality competition, even though I know my kids will be safe backstage, if I don't have my lights?
*Mr. Potato Head voice* OH, THE HORROR!

For what it is worth, however, American children are statistically DRAMATICALLY more safe now than in any time in our history.
Of course, the news would have a lot of parents thinking otherwise...

Events like shark attacks, terrorism, mass shootings, and kidnappings are incredibly scary. Thankfully, they are all extraordinarily rare in our part of the world statistically. That doesn't mean we just ignore them, but if our overall goal were to improve health/safety, those should be pretty low on our priority list compared to more "mundane" things like childhood obesity, texting while driving, or backyard pools.

It's the job of the media to make us afraid so we are compelled to watch more news so we will know what we need to be currently afraid of.
I feel like our (American) media is the worst. Do you guys remember the episode of Russell Howard's Good News, in which he compared the news coverage of Ebola in the US to that in the UK? It was hilarious!

TBH, I've never heard of an incident actually happening in the warm up area. I've heard of crazy parents trying to sneak into warm ups, but that's about it. These incidents we hear about typically happen in the gym or elsewhere. I think because this is the only way USASF can really regulate requiring background checks for coaches, it's going to help more in the gym, by knowing these coaches working with kids are background checked (at least the majority of them), and it will keep other non-coaches/parents that have no business being back in warm ups from getting in.

Except when you have a small gym that has parents bring kids back to warm ups because coach is coaching multiple teams. Have been in a gym where at one point that was what happened. It was a big comp other coaches were busy with their teams it was an all hands on deck and team moms got pulled into being the person that took kids into warm ups and then coach ran back and worked with them there. So now making a parent do background check yet another parent cost.
I get the point of the rule and that it is at least a step (not complaining about the step) but when you have been at a comp where something has gone down and the EPs response ends up being "well yes we hired them for this comp but we can't control the situation not our problem even though they are representing us right now" then all this whohah about background checks for people in your own gym to bring kids back just seems a little silly and putting more costs and responsibilities on the gyms and I would like to see the EPs take it on. I applaud that Varsity does require all their employees to be checked and that they are the ones in the warm up rooms given their pull I would hope that then they would encourage USASF to require all EPs to do the same and that only those background check employees also be the only staff allowed in warm up rooms. It is a start and each step makes a difference in keeping this a safe sport in a multitude of ways....

Did anyone see this? CheerUpdates posted this last week.

I guess Jaylen can't go to warm ups with OO5 anymore even though she is allowed and accompanied by their coach. She will be incredibly sad. Lol

For an athlete the rule is unchanged from last season, she just has to be on the roster to be allowed with a team.

Well last season it wasn't enforced much overall because she went to warm ups with them several times and no one said anything to her ever during warm ups. Something was said on day 2 nca when they were taking the floor to perform. But for warmups both cheersport and nca allowed her to go. She was with their coaches so that's probably why but it wasn't enforced even if that rule was unchanged.
