All-Star No More Double Downs In High School

Do all states follow National Fed rules?

I know there are several schools that don't do UCA or NCA HS competitions. They go to all star comps that offer HS.

Okay i'm trying to keep myself as objective and unbiased as i possibly can. But how come allstar cheer is still allowed to do double fulls when their are plenty of kids tearing ACLs and such all the time? There are some small gyms that have kids throw some seriously janky tumbling. The kind that makes you hold your breath. I don't understand why high school cheer ALWAYS gets the heat for everything.
Completely different governing bodies.

that is fantastic! I am seriously hoping they get rid of twisting in tumbling for high school as well. they just don't have the performance surface and most don't have the coaches.

You nailed it with your last comment. Most don't have the appropriate surface. My duaghters school has all the appropriate gear and coaching needed for doing cheer but I know other surrounding schools do not. Each school is different and from a safety standpoint we cannot assume each school has the appropriate staff or equipment for this.

You can't play football with out pads.

It's called rugby :D
Seriously, though I agree with you. I feel that the safety of the majority must outweigh the skills of the minority.
On a side note, how many cheerleaders make college squads that haven't done all-stars? Here, it's pretty unheard of at least with the larger universities.

I like the Rugby comment. It made me laugh.

Obviously there are different governing bodies, but I think her point was that there are also a high number of injuries coming from unsafe progressions at the allstar level as well and no one is considering eliminating their skills.

As a high school cheer coach myself, I'm not too sure how receptive our athletic department would be to this. But I suppose it's worth a shot if anyone is desperate to compete double downs.

I don't think technically that would be allowed under SCHSL rules if the same coach (high school ) does the "all star" team. Pretty sure the rules regulate how many people from a sports team are allowed to train with the coach in any arena during the off season. I believe this issue arose with a volleyball ball program here.

But I could be wrong

Anyway. I support the getting rid of double downs, esp here in SC. They were beautiful to watch on the teams that could execute them correctly....however the teams that were just chucking them to try to get those extra points and had girls landing on their stomachs...inverting and everything in between.... Well I'm just glad those days are over.

Personally I'm looking forward to teams having to use creativety in their dismounts now.

I also don't think this rule and this rule alone will set hs cheerleaders back...or make them have to pilgrimage to all star cheer in order to become a college cheerleader.

Personally my sister (despite the fact that she does all star, but only level 3) will be making the effort to learn level 5 and 6 stunting (basing and flying) at a cheer gym over the next year to get ready for college try outs (seperate from her allstar team). I think others might go similiar routes as well

Completely agree! The simple difference is each all star program is privately held and the schools are under rule of each state and then federal oversight.

You are touching on an issue within all star that I feel needs to be addressed and has been discussed.

For the record, this actually helps my school team. We don't have majority doubles but you better believe we can out single-down anyone in the state. Still doesn't mean I'm in favor of it though.

I think I would be a little more receptive to it if the pyramid changes weren't implemented as well. I think you could have played the safety card up until then. If a high school coach isn't qualified to teach double downs, what makes them qualified to teach suspended hip over head rotations?

This may be completely off base, but I just can't imagine a high school girl with only high school experience even wanting to go to these schools. These schools thrive because they are a continuation of all star in a sense.... They have the best of the best in the all star world, and many times the kids can cheer both for the school and for all star open teams. In my mind, the teams you stated about are the who's who of all stars, not kids that are being held back by their HS teams and the rules of HS.
My best friend is a junior this year and has been contacted by 2 or 3 big cheerleading schools and she only does highschool. not all good cheerleaders do allstar, there are plenty of amazing cheerleaders that are just on their highschool team. this certain girl has arabian to full and full to full SOLID on hard floor. she at one point was working on her standing full and she has never cheered allstar.

Good point with the creativity. Should be interesting to watch.

I am completely against this rule. my high school team got wind of it today and none of them are happy. a few girls on that team haven't done a single down in 3 years! i am not sure if they even remember how.

And reality in SC teams only doubled from 3 body positions ( arabesque, scale, scorpion)....which in my experience were also the 3 easiest.

So... snaps for them having to do something else.
